PORTLAND, Ore. - Boise State volleyball went the distance Saturday morning to get the victory in five sets (19-25, 25-17, 25-21, 28-30, 15-11) over Gonzaga on the second day of the Northwest Challenge in Portland, Ore. The Broncos rallied from a set one loss to claim the hard fought win with victories in sets two, three and five. After Boise State took the lead it was forced to hold off Gonzaga which attempted a late rally before the Broncos claimed victory.
“Its great to get the first win of the season,” said coach Shawn Garus. “I was happy with the way some of the young players stepped up and played really well. I hope we can carry the momentum into tonight’s match against Portland State.”
The win was the first of the season for Boise State who improved to 1-1 on the year and weekend with a match on tap for tonight against Portland State, the tournament host.
Five Broncos reached double-digit kills in the match led by a career-high 20 from Taylor Murphey. She was followed by the trio of Brittany Reardon, Katelyn Kinghorn and Sarah Horton who recorded 11 each, while Aly Duffin finished with 10.
The match began slow for Boise State which watched the Bulldogs pull away midway through set one to claim the win in the opening frame.
Down one set, Boise State began its rally with a impressive win in set two where the Broncos rolled off a 6-0 run early to take control breaking a close set at 7-5 open for a 13-5 advantage. They blue and orange went up by as many as 10 points before taking a 25-17 set win to tie the match at one apiece.
The next two sets were battles with the Broncos taking set three 25-21, maintaining a small lead most of the way. Up one in the match score at 2-1, Boise State let the fourth set get away from it down the stretch. The Broncos rallied from three down at 21-18 to take the lead with a 5-0 run to go up 23-21. However, the Bulldogs would not go away as they rallied to deny Boise State the four-set victory after the Broncos had four match points. Eventually Boise State fell 30-28 as Gonzaga forced a fifth set.
Boise State took control of the fifth and decisive set midway through the frame taking a 12-9 lead then held off Gonzaga for a 15-11 set victory when Sarah Baugh finished it with a service ace for the final point and a 3-2 match win.
Taylor Murphey had a big match for the Broncos who were playing without Alyssa Gammel for a second time. The Saint George, Utah native, tied her career best hitting percentage at 40 percent (20-6-35) with a all-time high of 20 kills to go with five blocks. Kinghorn recorded her first career double-double as she set a couple career highs with 11 kills and 21 digs to go with two blocks.
Brittany Reardon also stood out for the blue and orange with 11 kills while hitting 39.1 percent to go along with four blocks, two solos. Newcomer Sarah Horton recorded a Boise State career best 11 kills in addition to 12 digs and one block solo. Junior Aly Duffin entered the contest during set two to record career-highs for kills with 10, hitting percentage at 60 percent, and blocks with seven.
A few other notable performances came from senior setter Casey Rose who finished with a team-best 36 assists to go with two kills, two service aces and 10 digs, her first double-double of the year. Sophomore setter Sarah Baugh followed with 28 assists, while freshman libero Hannah Hubbard had a impressive defensive effort with a career and team-high 28 digs.
