Broncos Sweep NDSU in Season Opener
Aug. 25, 2017
TEMPE, Ariz. - Sierra Nobley recorded four of Boise State's final six points in the contest to hand the Broncos a season opening sweep over North Dakota State 25-15, 27-25, 25-23 at the Sun Devil Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
After cruising to a 10-point opening set win the Broncos found the going a little tougher in the final two periods as the Bison refused to go away.
After winning the second frame in extra points 27-25 and leading 2-0 in the match, Boise State suddenly found itself trailing 22-19 in the third and in danger of going into a fourth set. That is when the Broncos' senior leader Sierra Nobley placed the team on her shoulders and scored four Boise State's final six points, including the final three, to closeout the sweep with a 25-23 set three victory.
The Broncos struggled a little offensively hitting only 19 percent in the contest, however, their defense was out standing recording 10 blocks and holding the Bison to 8.8 percent hitting. Boise State had a 51-to-31 advantage in kills, 49-to-31 in assists, 74-to-63 in digs and 10-to-6 in blocks.
This is Boise State's third straight season opening victory as it improved to 20-19 overall and 11-14 on the road in openers since 1979. The Broncos also improved to 2-0 all-time in the series versus the NDSU Bison.
The season opening weekend continues on Saturday with a pair of matches against Weber State at 11 a.m. (Mountain) followed by an encounter with their host the Arizona State Sun Devils in the tournament finale at 6 p.m.
What They Said
Coach Shawn Garus: "It was great to open the season with a win, especially a 3-0 win. We didn't play well in sets two or three but it was good to find a way to win. I was excited to see us fight back with our backs to the wall a little. Our defense was very good today led by Maddi Osburn, Janell Walley and Sierra Nobley."
Sabryn Roberts: "I'm glad to get the first match of the season butterflies out of the way. We came here to get results and we got the win. Our focus is to turn it up a few notches and tighten the ship by focusing on the little details, I'm excited for tomorrow's matches!"
Sierra Nobley: "This was the best first match we've played since I've been at Boise State. Everyone was ready to compete and we came out with a solid first set. I'm very proud of the new additions to our starting lineup. Late in the second and third sets we got a little stressed but managed to work together and pull out a victory."
