Jovana Kuljanin Named Captain for 2017-18 Women's Tennis
Dec. 21, 2017

BOISE, Idaho – Sophomore Jovana Kuljanin was officially named captain of the 2018 Boise State women’s tennis team, head coach Beck Roghaar recently announced.

"Jovana has earned this role in every sense of the word earned. She is the definition of Blue Collar and is constantly thinking of what she can give to better our team and program and always puts the team before herself. She's incredibly mature and life smart, and I don't know that I've met a 20-year old that has the maturity and drive to succeed in the vision she has for her life day out. That consistency is a huge part of what makes her so special as a person, player, student and leader. The team knows that they can trust Jovana both on and off the court every day to help model and give them what we need to be successful,” said Roghaar.

In her freshman season in 2016-17, Kuljanin boasted a winning record, playing mostly out of the No. 5 spot. She also competed in doubles with Nancy Menjivar in the No. 3 spot. Kuljanin was a four-star recruit coming out of Murrieta Valley HS in Temecula, Calif., leading her team to back-to-back CIF titles, earning regional MVP honors with a senior record of 69-9 overall, 33-1 in Southwestern League play.

Originally from Serbia, Kuljanin was ranked the 40th-best in national junior rankings before moving to the United States at age 14.

It is her work off the court that is equally as impressive, as she was named “Student of the Generation” while in Serbia for being the area’s best overall student in elementary and middle school. She has won numerous national awards in academic competitions and in the United States has been honored for achievement in chemistry, pre-calculus, Spanish and U.S. History.

“She gets the job done in all facets. She's a 4.0 student, leads the team in community service, never takes a day off from her max effort on the courts or anything she's doing,” explained Roghaar. “Jovana is so genuine and honest as a person, and she cares deeply for everyone in her life and our program. All I know is that when Jovana wants things to happen in her life, they do, so with her leading our team as a captain I feel so great that she and all the young women we have in our program are headed for greatness."

Kuljanin and the Broncos open up the 2018 campaign on January, 20, 2018 when they host Whitman at 11 a.m. MT.
