Women's Tennis Enjoys Strong Weekend at Matador Intercollegiate Invitational

                NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Boise State women's tennis team sent two student-athletes to the 2009 Matador Intercollegiate Invitational at Cal State Northridge in Northridge, Calif. this past weekend (Nov. 13-15), where the Broncos earned one singles title, while also advancing to the championship round in doubles competition.

            Marlena Pietzuch captured her first individual title of the fall, winning four matches on the way to earning the Flight B singles championship. Pietzuch opened the tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Hannah Dake (Air Force) in the round of 16. She advanced through the quarterfinals with a win over Debora Castany of Arizona (6-4, 6-4), before taking down Anna Yang (Cal State Northridge) 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. Pietzuch capped off the weekend with a win over Lais Ogata (Nevada) 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the final round.

            Pietzuch also managed to reach the final round of the Flight B doubles bracket, winning three matches with teammate Rocio Frej to reach the championship match. Pietzuch and Frej beat Brianna McClintock and Vanesa Reibstein (CSU Stanislaus) 9-7 and Bryanna Ojeda and Asagi Onaga (UC Santa Barbara) 8-6 to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Pietzuch and Frej fought hard but fell just short of a win (8-5), losing to Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch of Cal State Northridge.

            Frej also competed in Flight B of the singles tournament, where she finished with a 2-1 record on the weekend. Frej earned wins over Jill Sangria (Cal State L.A.), 6-1, 6-1 and Onaga, 6-4, 6-3. Her weekend would finally come to an end in the semifinals, where Frej lost to Ogata, 6-3, 6-2.
