Broncos End Fall Season At Husky Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. Four Boise State women’s tennis players spent the weekend in Seattle at the 2007 Fall Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. Broncos Stacey Housley, Pichittra Thongdack, Klaudia Wlodarczyk, and Bianca Jochimsen competed at the tournament which lasted from Friday, November 9 through Sunday, November 11.


BSU’s top player of the tournament, senior Stacey Housley, went 3-1 over the three days, making her way into the Flight 2 singles final where she faced Aleksandra Malovic of the Washington. Housley placed second in her bracket, dropping to Malovic 6-4, 6-3 in the final. En route to her second place finish, the Auckland, New Zealand native plowed past Portland State’s Anya Dalkin (6-0, 6-1) in the first round of 16, as well as the University of Portland’s Jenna Tanzer (6-1, 6-0) in the quarterfinals. Fighting her way to the final round, Housley topped UW’s Melinda Wong in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision.


Sophomore Pichittra Thongdack finished 3-1 on the weekend, advancing to the finals of the Flight 1 Singles consolation bracket. Earning a bye through the round of 16, Thongdack first saw action in the main draw quarterfinals where she fell to UW’s Tara Simpson (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) sending her to the consolation bracket. There the Petchaburi, Thailand native topped Lindsey Griffen of Portland (6-1, 7-6) in the consolation quarterfinals. Thongdack also blew past Eastern Washington’s Kasey Knox in a 6-1, 6-1 semifinal decision. Advancing to the consolation finals, Thongdack was to face teammate Wlodarczyk, both electing to not play the final contest. Thongdack also played an additional consolation match out of the back draw bracket, topping Portland State’s Lacey Plibsen 7-5, 6-1.


Klaudia Wlodarczyk recorded a 3-1 record over the weekend, first by defeating Knox (6-1, 6-0) in the first round of 16. In the quarterfinal round, Wlodarczyk dropped a tough 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 decision to UW’s Venise Chan, shifting her to the Flight 1 singles back draw. The Skorcz, Poland native went 2-0 in the back draw, first topping Portland State’s Plibsen (6-2, 6-2) followed by Eastern Washington’s Kerstyn Dolack (6-3, 6-1). Wlodarczyk’s semifinal win over Dolack concluded her singles play due to facing teammate Thongdack in the finals.


Also seeing action in the Flight 1 Singles bracket, sophomore Bianca Jochimsen earned a round of 16 bye, putting her head to head with Portland’s Megan Sporndli where she fell 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. BSU’s Wlodarczyk took Jochimsen’s placed in the back draw, ending Jochimsen’s singles play for the tournament with a 0-1 record.


In doubles play, Wlodarczyk and Jochimsen joined together to go 1-1 over the weekend. After earning a round of 16 bye, the BSU duo took on EWU’s Kerstyn Dolack and Marie Demerath, sweeping the Eagles 8-0 in the quarterfinals. Wlodarczyk and Jochimsen faced UW’s Joyce Ardies and Tara Simpson in the semifinals, dropping 8-3 to end their doubles play for the weekend.


Also playing as a doubles team for BSU, Housley and Thongdack teamed together to finish 1-2 on the weekend. Playing Washington’s Venise Chan and Aleksandra Malovic in the quarterfinal round, the Broncos dropped 8-2, advancing to the back draw quarterfinals. There the BSU team topped EWU’s Kasey Knox and Amanda Mankovitz in a quick 8-1 decision to make their way to the consolation semifinals. Facing Portland’s Megan Sporndli and Lindsey Griffen, the Bronco duo fell in a close 8-6 match, ending their play at the Husky Invitational.


The four Broncos end their 2007 Fall season with the Husky Invitational while two others complete their fall season at the Matador Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge on November 12.
