Thongdach Brings Home Title from Matador Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. Junior Pichittra Thongdach finished up her fall season with a singles title as she and sophomore Lauren Megale competed this weekend at the Matador Inviatational. The title is the first singles title for Thongdach this year, who also won a doubles title this year at the Racquet Club Invitational in October.

Thongdach entered the tournament as the No.4-seeded player in the draw. She faced Audrey Bukley (Loyola Marymount) in her first round matchup, making quick work of Buckley with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. THongdach advanced to the quarterfinals to face Alex Liles (Pepperdine), who beat Thongdach in the quarterfinals of the Racquet Club Invitational earlier in the season. This time, Thongdach took her revenge with a three set 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Liles. The semifinals pitted Thongdach against Evgenlya Vertesheva. In another hard-fought three-set match, Thongdach pulled out the win by defeating Vertesheva 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. With that win, she advanced into a singles final for the first time this fall where she met Katie Sabate (Fresno Pacific). Thongdach did not waste the opportunity of playing in the championship match as she took home the title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Megale hit the ground running when she arrived in Northridge, and she just kept running as se cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 first round victory over Tania Rice (Pepperdine). In the quarterfinals, Megale went toe-to-toe with the No. 1-seeded Anamika Bhargava. Bhargava (Pepperdine) was not enough to slow her down as she rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win to advance into the semifinals. Megale met Sabate in the semifinals and was finally forced to a halt as she dropped the match 6-2, 6-4.

The duo of Megale and Thongdach proved to be somewhat of a force as well as they advanced into the finals of the doubles bracket. In the quarterfinals, the pair drew Sabate and Vanessa Heroux and took the match 8-5. In the semifinals, the Broncos ran into Chloe Hayasaka and Kristina Doerr (BYU) but cruised to another victory, winning 8-0. The victory put the Bronco duo in the finals, giving Thongdach and Megale their second opportunity for a doubles title this season. However, the pair fell just short as the Pepperdine duo of Liles and Bhargava edged out an 8-6 victory to take the title.

Overall, the pair of Broncos went 8-2 to finish the fall season on another high note. The regular season will kickoff on Jan. 23 when Boise State plays host to Montana State in their quest for a third-straight NCAA tournament appearance.
