Broncos End Fall Season On High Note

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State women’s tennis team concluded their fall season with a near perfect weekend as they hosted the BSU Overhead Smash Invite at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. The five Broncos that competed put together a very impressive 24-1 combined record through the three-day round robin tournament.

Four Boise State players went undefeated on the weekend, including senior Laura Baum, who went a combined 7-0. Baum went 3-0 in doubles play with three different partners, including a pair of 8-1 victories with partners Bianca Jochimsen and Jana Mackova. She also went 4-0 in singles play, winning every match in straight sets. Baum began the weekend with 6-1, 6-2 victory over Missy Harris (Montana State). On Saturday she picked up two more victories with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lisa Clark (Montana State) and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Laura Villegas (Montana State). Sunday brought a bit of a challenge, but Baum was able to hold off Alexandra Ulesanu (Idaho) in a 6-4, 7-6 victory.

Fellow senior Klaudia Wlodarczyk also enjoyed a perfect weekend, going 5-0. Wodarczyk won her only doubles match of the weekend with teammate Jana Mackova on Friday in an 8-2 victory over a Texas State duo. In singles play, Wlodarczyk cruised to her first victory on Friday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ashley Ellis (Texas State). Saturday brought two more victories as she defeated Silvia Irimescu (Idaho) - 7-5, 6-3, and also edged out a nailbiter with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) win over Stephanie Jasper (Montana State). In her final match on Sunday, Wlodarczyk once again cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lainy Chafitz (Texas State).

Mackova suffered the Broncos only loss of the tournament, but still dominated over the competition with a 6-1 record on the weekend. Mackova was a perfect 3-0 in doubles play, but suffered the loss in her first singles match of the tournament a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Jasper. Saturday’s singles play turned the tide for Mackova, who got back on the winning track with two victories. She won her first match by default, but defeated Nyssa Peele (Texas State) 6-3, 6-4. The success continued into Sunday as she won her final match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ellis.

Jochimsen also went 5-0 for the Broncos, including 2-0 in doubles play. In singles, she defeated Peele (Texas State) in decisive fashion with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. She followed that up on Saturday with two equally impressive victories; a 6-2, 6-2 win over Harris and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chafitz. On Sunday, Jochimsen won her only match of the day, a doubles match with Baum.

Freshman Rocio Frej matched the tournament-high with a perfect 7-0 mark on the weekend. Like Baum, she went 3-0 in doubles matches with three different partners. She also breezed to victory on Friday with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ali Griffin (Montana State). Saturday brought more of the same results with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mckenzie Hilmer (Montana State) and a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ellis. Frej continued the domination into Sunday as she finished the tournament with 6-1, 6-0 win over Irimescu.

The Broncos ended the fall tournament season with the last match on Sunday and will wait and train for their regular spring schedule, which begins Friday, Jan. 23 against Montana State.
