Housley Earns Singles Title at UNM Individual Invitational, Joins Baum for Doubles Title

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Two Boise State women’s tennis players traveled to the University of New Mexico Fall Individual Invitational October 18-21. Lauren Baum and Stacey Housley represented the Broncos finishing with a 9-2 record, including a perfect 3-0 doubles effort.

The duo combined together on Thursday, Oct. 18 to top Orsi Golovics and Edit Suhajda of Northern Arizona, 8-6 in Round One of play. On Saturday morning, the BSU tandem knocked off Erlyn Rudico and Sammy Sarkis of Air Force (8-6) in the Semifinals A, advancing to the top finals round on Saturday afternoon. Blowing their competition away, Baum and Housley defeated Colorado’s Tori Almagno and Christiane Pheil, 8-1, becoming the tournament doubles champions.

In individual action, Housley registered a 4-0 singles record, sweeping the singles Championship A title. To do so, the senior first defeated Rudico on Friday, 6-3, 6-1 in Round One A. Later that afternoon, she topped Golovics 6-4, 6-3 in the Quarterfinals A round. On Saturday, Housley fought off Mackenzie White of New Mexico, winning a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 match in the Semifinal A round. Earning the Championship A singles title, Housley won a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 match over New Mexico’s Jennifer Ryba.

Baum finished her singles competition with a 2-2 record over the weekend. In her first match, Baum blew past Christen Monreal of Air Force, 6-2, 6-1. That afternoon, the junior suffered a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss in the Quarterfinals A round to New Mexico’s Emma Hayman, bumping her to the consolation bracket. In the consolation Semifinal A Baum dropped to Almagno, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 before earning her final win on Sunday afternoon. Baum ended with a fourth place finish in the consolation bracket after topping Pheil in a quick 6-2, 6-0 match.

The two Broncos will reunite with their team on November 2-4 when BSU will host the Boise State Invitational. The competitions will be held at the Baus TennisCenter on the campus of Boise State University.
