Women's Tennis at ITA Central Regional

TULSA, Okla. (10/19/07) The Boise State University women’s tennis team is off to a solid start at the ITA Central Regional Qualifier hosted by the University of Tulsa, October 17-21. The Broncos have totaled eight wins in 11 matches, accumulating a perfect doubles record, 3-0, as well as a 5-3 singles record.


In doubles action, Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Bianca Jochimsen topped Northern Colorado’s Tabatha Knop and Manuela Santos, 8-3. The duo later fought hard to knock off the No. 10 seeded team of Ute Schmoy and Mallory Voleker of Denver University, 9-7. With the two wins, Wlodarczyk and Jochimsen will advance to Friday’s round of 16, facing the No. 6 seeded Leigh Walsh and Liz Ferris of Utah.


BSU’s Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach earned the third doubles victory on Thursday, blowing past Denver University’s Julia Baureggar and Kyla Iwinksi, 8-2. Kokoulina and Thongdach, the No. 7 doubles seed will take on Marta Marcinkowska and Thalia Barriga of Tulsa, the No. 15 seed, on Friday afternoon.


In singles action, No. 13 seed, Thongdash earned one of two singles wins on Thursday. Thongdash won a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 match over Denver’s Iwinski, advancing her to the Friday round of 32. Thongdash, 1-0 in the tournament, will face Brigham Young University’s Liza Ezhova Friday morning, hoping to advance to the afternoon round.


Also earning a win in Thursday’s round of 64, Jochimsen defeated Colorado’s Monica Milewski, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. With the win, Jochimsen advances to Friday’s round of 32, playing Arkansas’ Mayori Franco.


Three Broncos have advanced into the consolation singles bracket: Wlodarczyk, Kokoulina, and Jana Mackova. Wlodarczyk holds 2-1 record in the tournament earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Taylor Pippen of ORU, while also topping Manuela Santos of Northern Colorado, 6-1, 6-1, in prequalifying rounds. Wlodarczyk was defeated by the No. 9 seed, Elizaveeta Avdeeya of Kansas, in the round of 64 on Thursday (6-4, 6-1) sending her to the consolation singles bracket. On Friday, the junior will face Lauren Wilson of Air Force.


Holding a 0-1 singles record in the tournament, Kokoulina will look to bounce back after a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Oklahoma State’s Natalie Shatkovskaya. Kokoulina advances as the No. 5 seed in Friday’s round of 32 consolation bracket, taking on Lauren Strausberger of Colorado State.


Also seeing early action in the prequalifier round, Jana Mackova holds a 1-1 record entering Friday’s consolation bracket of 32. Mackova started off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wichita State’s Olga Elgin followed with a loss in the afternoon to Denver’s Iwinski, 6-1, 6-2. Mackova will face Ele Carney of BYU in an early round of the consolation bracket.


All five Broncos will see action on Friday, while both doubles teams will play as well. The tournament, which began on Wednesday, will last through Sunday.
