Two Broncos Advance in ITA Central Region Championship

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Two members of the Boise State University women’s tennis each earned victories in the qualifying round of the ITA Central Regional Championships, hosted by the Utah, to advance to the main draw which will be held Oct. 19 in Salt Lake City, Utah

Stacey Housley, senior from Auckland, New Zealand, defeated both her opponents in straight sets to advance to the main draw of the singles competition.  Housley ousted McCaye Badger of Utah, 6-1 and 6-2 then went on to beat Brigham Young’s Brianna Williamsen, 6-0 and 6-1.

“This is great for Stacey,” said head coach Mark Tichenor. “She has been playing really well the past four or five weeks, and that is great to see after not playing for a year (because of injuries).”

Freshman Bianca Jochimsen was the other Bronco to advance to the main draw. After receiving a bye in the opening round Jochimsen defeated Jocelyn Jensen of BYU in straight sets 6-0 and 6-1.

“Bianca is a beast out there,” said Tichenor. “She probably should have been in the main draw, but there are only so many spots.”

Laura Baum also earned a victory for Broncos Wednesday when she defeated Utah State’s Erin Manning in the first round 6-0 and 6-1. Baum’s day came to an end in the second round when she lost to Julia Bauregger of Denver, 4-6, 6-3 and 7-6 (10-3).

The final member of the Boise State women’s tennis team to compete in the qualifying portion of the tournament was Tiffany Coll who took Montana State’s Alex Griffin to a tiebreaker but wound up dropping the match 6-3, 5-7 and 7-6 (10-6).

Coach Tichenor had this to say about the tournament, "I'm excited to get the main draw started. With three doubles teams and some individuals going, I can't wait to see what we can do."

The main draw of the competition will feature both singles and doubles competitions and will begin Thursday, Oct. 19.
