Day Three Results from Regional Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Day No. 3 of the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. came and went, Friday (Oct. 15), which saw the Boise State women's tennis team punch its ticket into the semifinals of singles competition and quarterfinal round of doubles action.

Bronco senior Lauren Megale kept her record at the regional tournament perfect as she earned two more singles wins and one more victory in doubles on Friday. Megale opened up her day in singles with a big win over Sophia Bergner (Denver), 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the round of 16. Friday evening she would secure a spot in the semifinal round by knocking off Michaela Bezdickova of New Mexico, 7-6, 7-6.

Boise State began the day with four players still competing in the main draw of singles. By the end of Friday, Megale was the only Bronco left standing. Marlena Pietzuch joined Megale in the quarterfinal round after upsetting No. 72 ranked Jana Albers (UNLV), 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Pietzuch's run in singles would come to an end in the round of eight, however, as she fell to Michelle Okhremchuk (Nevada), 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, to fall from competition.

Broncos Elyse Edwards and Sonia Klamczynska each opened Friday with losses in the round of 16 to bow out of singles action. Edwards fell to Evgenia Kryuchkova (Utah), 6-4, 6-4, while Klamczynska dropped her match to the No. 1 overall seed Anastasia Putilina (Utah), 6-2, 6-4.

The day didn't end with singles for Boise State, though; as the Broncos also had two pairs competing in the main draw of doubles competition on Friday. Megale and Klamczynska earned a spot in Saturday's quarterfinal round with an 8-4 victory against Amy Shipperd and Bezdickova in the round of 16. Pietzuch and doubles partner Stephanie Jasper fell just short of joining Megale and Klamczynska in the quarterfinals with a 9-8 loss to Victoria Lozano and Lauren Simpson (Idaho) Friday afternoon.

The ITA Mountain Region Championships will continue on Saturday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles matches being played. In singles Megale is set to meet Putilina, who is currently ranked No. 67 nationally, for a spot in the championship match. Megale and Klamczynska, meanwhile, will face off against Lucia Batta and Anna Maskaljun (UNLV) for a spot in the doubles semifinal round.
