Broncos have Strong Showing on First Day of ITA Regional Championships

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State women’s tennis team finished the first day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., on Wednesday (Oct. 14) with a strong showing in both singles and doubles competition. The Broncos opened the weekend 8-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles.

Three Broncos earned two first day wins in singles, with Stephanie Jasper, Rocio Frej and Marlena Pietzuch all advancing to the round of 32 with a pair of wins. Jasper opened up her week with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Constance Alexander of Montana. In the second round she defeated Aodhnait Lombard (Nevada), 6-1, 6-4.

Frej also opened up the tournament with a first round win against Andie Young of BYU, 6-0, 6-0. Her second win of the day came against Montana’s Kayla Moyse (6-1, 6-2). Pietzuch won both of her matches in three sets, with the first coming against Kim Van Ginkel (Wyoming), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, and her second against Lexi Provancha of Utah, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Boise State also had three players open up tournament competition with a first round bye, as Pichittra Thongdach, Lauren Megale and Bianca Jochimsen all opened the week in the round of 64. Thongdach, who currently ranks No. 47 nationally, won her only match of the day, 6-1, 6-0, against Sasa Nemcova (Wyoming). Megale also opened her day with a second round win against Ella Bourchier (UNLV), 6-4, 6-3.

The Broncos’ only loss of the day came as Jochimsen dropped her first singles match, 6-2, 6-2, to Anna Maskaljun of UNLV.

Boise State also played one doubles match on day-one as Frej and Pietzuch defeated Sophia Bergner and Christin Thompson (Denver) 8-3.

The Broncos will continue play at the ITA Mountain Region Championships on Thursday, which will run through Saturday.
