Bronco Women Still Alive at Regional Championships
LAS VEGAS-Boise State women's tennis junior Marlena Pietzuch fought her way through the first three rounds of singles play at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas. The Broncos also advanced two doubles pairs to the round of 16. Matches resume Friday morning in both draws.
Pietzuch, the 10th seed in the tournament, cruised to a straight-set win in the first round against Northern Colorado's Steph Catlin, 6-0, 6-2. The second round pitted her against Rumyana Terzieva of UNLV. Terzieva used her home-court advantage to take the first set 6-0, but Pietzuch battled back for a 7-5 decision in the second and sailed to a 6-2 win in the deciding set. A 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win in the round of 32 against Danielle Flores from Utah sent Pietzuch into the fourth round of the main draw.
Sophomore Sandy Vo fell just short of joining Pietzuch. Vo defeated Carla Manzi of Colorado in the first round and upset 12th-seeded Callie Craig from Utah in straight sets in her second match. In the third round, Vo fell in a tight three-set match to Denver's Elena Najera Salas, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.
Vo and Pietzuch are both still alive in doubles. Pietzuch, playing with senior Sonia Klamczynska, took a bye through the first round and topped a Nevada pairing, 8-3, in the second round. Vo and her partner, Manuela Pietzuch, won their first two matches against duos from New Mexico State and Wyoming to reach the round of 16.
Klamczynska, the 16th-seeded singles player, took a 6-0, 6-0 win in the first round before falling in three sets in her second match. Manuela Pietzuch, a junior, lost in the first round of singles, but remains in contention for the consolation title.
Sophomore Morgan Basil rallied from a 6-1 first-set loss in her opening match to win 12 of the next 13 games and advance to the second round. Basil fell to the No. 11 seed Sarah Pham of Utah in her second match, 6-1, 6-3. Basil teamed with freshman Kaitlyn Brown in doubles. The Broncos won their first round match against a pair from New Mexico before dropping an 8-2 decision to seeded duo from Air Force.
Brown lost her two singles matches. Fellow freshman Austin McMillan made her Boise State debut at the championships, losing twice in singles action.
