Boise State Perfect on Final Day of Jack Taylor Classic
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State women’s tennis team wrapped-up the Jack Taylor Classic on Sunday (Oct. 4), moving the tournament indoors to the BOAS Tennis Center due to poor weather conditions all-day. The move from outside seemed to play to the Broncos’ advantage, as the women finished with a perfect record in both doubles (2-0) and singles (5-0) competition to conclude the weekend.
The Broncos kicked their morning off with a pair of doubles victories, starting with Pichittra Thondach and Marlena Pietzuch defeating Luda Vasilieva and Ekaterina Kamendova of Washington State, 8-1. Bianca Jochimsen and Stephanie Jasper completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over the University of Portland’s Megan Sporndli and Lacey Pflibsen.
In singles, Boise State bounced back from a winless second day of competition, to win all five matches on Sunday. Thongdach, who entered the weekend ranked No. 47 nationally, rebounded from a day-two loss by beating Kamendova, 6-3, 6-2. She was followed by Jochimsen, who earned a 6-1, 6-0 win against Laura Villegas of Montana State.
Jasper, Pietzuch and Rocio Frej also found success in singles, as all three Broncos needed three sets to earn their wins. Jasper beat Liz Fournier (WSU) 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Pietzuch defeated Ksenia Googe (WSU), 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 and Frej beat Andjela Kankaras (WSU), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
The majority of the women’s tennis team will be off for the next two weeks, as they look towards the ITA Mountain Region Championships on Oct. 14-18 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Thongdach will travel to Los Angeles, Calif. this week to join teammate Lauren Megale, as they will be representing Boise State at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships. Megale lost her first singles match in Saturday’s pre-qualifying round to Hillary Bartlett (Princeton), 6-2, 6-2, bumping her out of singles tournament action. Thongdach and Megale will compete in doubles, starting in the qualifying round, while Thongdach will start singles play in the main draw later in the week.
