Bronco Women's Tennis to Play for Titles Sunday

BOISE, Idaho-Boise State women's tennis put itself in position to play for two main draw championships at the Jack Taylor Classic with gutsy play Saturday, at the Appleton Tennis Center.

Junior Marlena Pietzuch rallied from a first-set loss for the second-straight day to earn a berth in the Blue Flight Championship match. Pietzuch took a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set win in the quarterfinal before getting pushed to the brink in the semifinal. She faced match point twice agains Weber State's Ashley Tanner before securing the win. Tanner and Pietzuch split 6-4 decisions in the first two sets. Tanner ran out to a 5-2 lead and had a 40-15 lead searching for her the win before Pietzuch battled to a 7-5 win. She will take on Michaela Bezdickova of Utah State. Bezdickova defeated Sonia Klamczynska to prevent an all-Bronco final.

Pietzuch and her twin sister Manuela will also play for a title Sunday, in Blue Flight Doubles. Their match with Maria Sablina and Nikolina Grbac of New Mexico went down to the wire, but the Bronco tandem held on for a 9-7 win.

Klamczynska, a senior, also won 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semis of the Blue Flight Singles Main Draw before meeting Bezdickova. Klamczynska dropped the first set in a tiebreak and fell 6-3 in the second set.

In consolation action, sophomores Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil each cruised to victory in their quarterfinal matches to set up a meeting in the semifinals. Basil got the better of her teammate in a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 match. She will face Sablina in the finals of the consolation ladder.

After facing off in singles, Vo and Basil teamed up in doubles action. The duo dropped an 8-5 decision in a semifinal match.

Klamczynska and freshman Kaitlyn Brown played together in Orange Flight Doubles, losing 9-7.

Brown also played a singles match Saturday, filling a place vacated by injury in the Blue Flight Consolation. She fell in a three-set match to Katherine Marsella of Idaho State.

Action resumes Sunday with finals matches beginning at 9 a.m. at Appleton Tennis Center.
