Bronco Women Wrap-Up Lobo Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Boise State women’s tennis team finished its’ weekend at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. in successful fashion, earning a 3-0 doubles record and a 6-3 record in singles play.

The Broncos were led by Marlena Pietzuch, who finished with a 3-1 record in singles competition. She started the weekend off with a pair of wins, beating New Mexico’s Ashley Bonner, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Kelsey Garland of Texas Tech 6-1, 6-3. Pietzuch would suffer her only loss of the tournament in the third round against Julia Bauregger of Denver, 6-1, 6-3. She would rebound, however, and finish the weekend with a win against Manumea Durie (UNM) 6-4, 6-0.

Teammate Stephanie Jasper also enjoyed a successful weekend in singles action, starting her tournament off with a 6-3, 6-2 win against UNM’s Laura Richardson. Jasper would drop her second match of the weekend, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, in a hard fought match that would drop her into consolation play. She would also rebound with a victory against Caroline Starck (TTU), 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Jasper’s run in singles would come to an end in her fourth match, however, losing to Arizona’s Ariane Masschelein 6-2, 6-2.

Rocio Frej was the final Bronco competing at the Lobo Invite, although she was forced to bow out of singles competition after her first win due to injury. Frej did win her first match of the weekend, beating Jane Huh of Arizona 7-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Pietzuch and Frej teamed up in doubles, winning two of Boise State’s three matches on the weekend. The duo beat Garland and Elizabeth Ullathorne of Texas Tech, 8-5, to open tournament play. In the Broncos’ second match, Jasper would step in and play with Frej, resulting in a 8-5 win against Bonner and Durie. Pietzuch and Frej would finish doubles play for Boise State, beating Bauregger and Ute Schnoy of Denver University, 9-8, to finish the doubles tournament with a perfect record.

Next up for Boise State is the Jack Taylor Classic, which will be hosted by the Broncos next Friday-Sunday (Oct. 2-4) at the Appleton Tennis Complex.
