Women's Tennis Dominant at WSU Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Boise State women's tennis team enjoyed a dominant weekend (Sept. 24-26) at the Washington State University Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash., as the Broncos compiled a 16-3 singles record while capturing a singles title and a runner-up finish in doubles.

Sophomore Elyse Edwards led the charge for Boise State in singles as she raced to the Crimson Bracket title with a 6-0 record on the weekend. Edwards won five of six matches in straight sets. Her only third set match of the weekend would come against teammate Marlena Pietzuch, who fell to Edwards, 4-6, 6-2, 3-0 (retired), in the semifinals. Edwards wrapped up the singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ksenia Googe of Washington State in the final round.

Edwards wasn't the only Bronco that enjoyed success in singles, however, as Boise State placed three players in the semifinal round of the Crimson Bracket. Pietzuch and Sonia Klamczynska also reached the semifinals where both of them would suffer their first loss of the weekend. Pietzuch opened the tournament with three wins before falling to Edwards in the semis. Klamczynska, meanwhile, captured four wins before losing to Googe, 7-5, 6-0, in the semifinal round.

Boise State freshman Morgan Basil also competed in the singles tournament, where she would play to the quarterfinal round. Basil opened her weekend with a pair of wins before falling to Googe, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of eight.

In doubles, Pietzuch and Klamczynska joined forces to earn a runner-up finish in the Crimson Bracket as the duo would compile a 3-1 record on the weekend. After opening the tournament with a 9-8 win over Rebecca Bran and Whitney Paluch of Montana, Pietzuch and Klamczynska beat Olga Musilovich and Marina Nicolas (WSU) 8-6 to advance to the semifinals. The Bronco duo would beat Liudmila Vasilieva and Elisabeth Fournier (WSU) 8-2 in the semis before losing to Andjela Kankaras and Googe (WSU), 8-2, in the title match.

The women will look to keep their momentum going as they turn their attention to Boise State's only home tournament of the fall next weekend (Oct. 1-3). The Broncos will host the annual Jack Taylor Classic, Friday through Sunday, at the Appleton Tennis Center.
