Women's Tennis Weekend Update: Jochimsen and Baum win Cougar Classic doubles title, Wlodarczyk claims BYU Invitational singles c
Members of the Boise State women’s tennis team saw their first action of the fall season this weekend with Bianca Jochimsen and Laura Baum winning the doubles title at Washington State’s "Cougar Classic" in Pullman, Washington. Meanwhile, junior Klaudia Wlodarczyk won the consolation singles title going 4-1 overall at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah. In all, five Bronco veterans competed this weekend representing Boise State in the two regional tournaments. Polina Kokoulina, Jana Mackova, and Klaudia Wlodarczyk competed Thursday thru Saturday in the BYU Invitational, while Jochimsen and Baum where at the Cougar Classic on the campus of Washington State University Friday thru Sunday.
A note to those who are new to college tennis: During the fall season there is no team competition as each player competes either as an individual or with a doubles partner representing Boise State at the various tournaments in which they participate. Team scoring and competition officially begins in January of each year and ends with the national tournament in late May or early June.
Three Broncos open year at BYU Invitational, Wlodarczyk wins consolation singles title . . .
PROVO, Utah (9/20-22/2007) - This fall’s competition began for the Boise State women on Thursday at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah. Senior Polina Kokoulina along with juniors Jana Mackova and Klaudia Wlodarczyk represented Boise State at the Utah tournament. All three competed in the "A" bracket for singles, while Mackova and Wlodarczyk paired up for the doubles portion of the classic. In all, the threesome went 7-4 during singles play and 1-1 in doubles.
Polina Kokoulina advanced to the semifinals of the bracket with victories over Utah’s Erin Monson 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16 and BYU’s Elizaveta Ezhova 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, the St. Petersburg, Russia native’s run ended in the semifinals when she was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by BYU’s Christina Doerr, the eventual tournament champion.
Jana Mackova, from Nova Dubnica, Slovakia, recorded a 1-2 record overall as she reached the Classic’s quarterfinals. She defeated Colorado State’s Laura Neal 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16 to advance to the final eight. However, that was as far as Mackova would go as she was defeated by Neal’s CSU teammate Lauren Strasburger 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. The loss dropped Mackova into the classic plate back-draw where she fell to Utah’s Jane Krynchkova 6-3, 6-2.
Klaudia Wlodarczyk struggled during her first round match losing 7-5, 6-1 to Colorado State’s Anette Pohjalainen in the round of 32. However, Wlodarczyk rebounded from the first round defeat by winning the consolation bracket with four consecutive victories. The march to the consolation championship began with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Utah State’s Breanna Harris, followed by victories over Colorado State’s Hilary Tyler 6-2, 6-2 and Utah’s Leigh Walsh 6-1, 5-7, 10-3. That setup the championship match with BYU’s Dolly Chang who Wlodarczyk defeated 6-0, 6-2 to claim the consolation title.
Mackova and Wlodarczyk teamed up for the doubles competition winning their first match 8-3 over Colorado State’s Caitlin Fluegge and Kirsten Stople in the round of 16. The duo was then eliminated during the quarterfinal round when Utah’s tandem of Liz Ferris and Leigh Walsh defeated the Broncos by the score of 8-6.
Baum and Jochimsen win doubles title at Cougar Classic . . .
PULLMAN, Washington (9/21-23/2007) - The Boise State women had a strong showing at Washington State’s Cougar Classic over the weekend. Laura Baum and Bianca Jochimsen represented the Broncos in the competition. The duo teamed up to win the doubles title 8-3 over Washington State’s Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova in the championship match Sunday morning. Jochimsen had a good singles competition as well advancing all the way to the championship match before losing in the final. On the weekend, the two went a combined 4-3 overall in singles and 4-0 in doubles.
Laura Baum went 1-2 in singles winning her first match 6-2, 7-5 over Eastern Washington’s Kasey Knox. Then the junior from Stuttgart, Germany lost her next match in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-1 to Gonzaga’s Aglaya Kokurina. The loss dropped her into the back draw where she scratched before playing the match.
Bianca Jochimsen had a great weekend overall to open her sophomore campaign for Boise State. The Rodgau, Germany native dispatched her first opponent Portland’s Lindsey Griffin 7-6, 6-2. She then won a hard fought three-set match in the quarterfinals defeating Wyoming’s Corina Lazar 7-6, 1-6, 7-5. The semifinal round proved to be no easier for Jochimsen who was forced to rally from one set down to hand Washington State’s Ekaterina Kamendova a three set defeat. Jochimsen eventually won the match 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the championship match on Sunday morning. The final pitted Boise State’s Jochimsen against Washington State’s Ekaterina Burduli who handed the Bronco her first loss of the season 6-0, 6-4.
In the doubles competition the Bronco tandem was unbeatable as they swept through their four matches to claim the Cougar Classic title. They opened the competition with a solid 8-4 victory over Idaho’s team of Silvia Irimescu and Jana Siwa. They faced their toughest competition in the quarterfinal match win over Eastern Washington’s duo of Kasey Knox and Amanda Mankovits who took six games from the Broncos before bowing out 8-6. Baum and Jochimsen then faced two pairs from the host Washington State squad in the next two rounds. First came Aleksandra Cekic and Jessica Gomez in the semifinals where the Broncos won quickly by a 8-3 margin. The championship matched placed Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova against the Boise State tandem. Just like in the semifinal match, Baum and Jochimsen handed the Washington State pair the same result as their teammates in the semifinal round, a 8-3 defeat to claim the title. The first tournament (non-consolation) championship for the Boise State team this season.
