Broncos Start Fall Season on High Notes

PULLMAN, Wash. All four members of the Boise State women’s tennis team that competed in the Cougar Classic last weekend reached the finals in at least one event. The Broncos took the doubles titles in both draws as well as reaching the singles finals in the No.1 singles draw and the No. 2 singles draw.

Junior Bianca Jochimsen reached the No. 1 singles final by nearly sweeping her way through the bracket. In her first round match, Jochimsen defeated Stephanie Jasper (Montana State) in a three-set battle 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. That would be the only time that Jochimsen would have to go three-sets as she swept her next two matches to reach the finals, where she lost a hard-fought match to Ekaterina Kamendova (Washington State) 7-5, 6-4.

In her Bronco debut, freshman Rocio Frej quickly established herself as a major force by reaching the finals in the No. 2 singles draw. Frej swept her way through the bracket with three straight-set wins until she reached the finals. Frej fell in the finals to Elisabeth Fournier (Washington State) in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

The Broncos were unstoppable in the doubles competitions, winning both the No. 1 draw title and the No. 2 draw title. Senior Laura Baum competed with Jochimsen in the No. 1 bracket. The pair took the first round match 8-5 over Laura Villegas and Jasper (Montana State) and never looked back. The pair would reach the finals and took the title with a convincing 8-2 win over Liz Walker and Martyna Nowak (Montana). Frej competed with senior Jana Mackova, who also reached the semifinals in the No. 1 singles bracket, in the No. 2 doubles bracket and saw the same success as their teammates. The duo took their first round match 8-2, followed by back-to-back 8-1 victories. In the finals, Frej and Mackova kept rolling with an 8-4 victory over Aleksandra Cekic and Fournier (Washington State).

The four Broncos put together a combined score of 16-4 for the tournament.

Two members of the women’s tennis team also competed in the BYU Invitational over the past weekend. Senior Klaudia Wlodarczyk advanced into the semifinals of the consolation bracket before falling to Chie Hayasaka (BYU) 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0). In another Bronco debut, sophomore Lauren Megale advanced to the finals of the main draw, where she was defeated by McCall Jones (BYU) 6-3, 6-2. Megale defeated the No. 1 seed of the tournament, Christina Doerr (BYU) to earn her spot in the finals. Megale and Wlodarczyk also took the doubles title, making them the third duo of the weekend to earn a doubles title.
