Boise State Continues Strong Performance at the JTC

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State women’s tennis team continued its strong performance at the Jack Taylor Classic on Saturday going 5-3 in singles and 3-1 in doubles at the Appleton Tennis Center. The Broncos where impressive in singles going 5-3 against a solid Washington State Cougar squad that finished nationally rank last year.  
 
“Today was another good step forward for our team here at the courts. We’ve been working hard on some very specific things that will help us win matches individually and as a team, and we’re progressing well towards the things we want to be doing out there,” said head coach Beck Roghaar. “Again not a finished product, but great to see the progress we have made. We competed well in doubles and stepped up in some important matches against Washington State in singles. Our players have been doing a good job of bringing a competitive mind set and belief in what they’ve learned to the courts so far at this event. Day three will be another good challenge and experience for us tomorrow.”
 
The day opened at 10 a.m. with three doubles matches against the Montana Grizzlies and one versus Washington State. The Broncos took two of the three contest against the Grizzlies with victories by the tandem of Teal Vosburgh and Megan LaLone  6-1 over Cam Kincaid and Hannah Sulz, as well as a quick 6-0 shutout by Sammie Watson and Bobbi Oshiro over Christy Scott and Anabel Carbo Estruch. 
 
Kaitlyn Brown and Naomi de Hart defeated the pair of Grace Lymer-Sullivan and Holly Monahan from Washington State by a 6-3 margin, while Milena Toseva and Arianna Paules Aldrey fell 7-5 to Montana’s Sasha Carter and Catherine Orfanos. 
 
The Broncos 3-1 doubles mark on Saturday matched yesterday’s results to give them a 6-2 record heading into the final day tomorrow morning. 
 
The second session began at noon when the Broncos took one the Washington State Cougars in eight singles matches at the Appleton Tennis Center. Boise State was solid throughout the lineup as they went toe-to-toe with the Pac-12 Cougars.
 
Junior Bobbi Oshiro rallied from one set down to defeat WSU’s Nastia Vasyukhina decisively in the final two sets for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. She has won both singles contests this weekend.
 
Sammie Watson, a junior from Denver, recorded a solid victory in three sets when she downed Victoria Matejevic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Like Oshiro, Watson has also won both matches at the JTC heading into Sunday.
 
Both Boise State freshmen recorded victories on Saturday with Arianna Paules Aldrey sweeping WSU’s Donika Bashota 7-6 (5), 6-4. Naomi de Hart followed with a two-set victory handing Grace Lymer-Sullivan a 6-1, 6-1 set back. Paules Aldrey is 2-0 this weekend, while de Hart is 1-1.
 
The fifth Bronco to record a win on Saturday was junior Megan LaLone who put away Washington State’s Maria Biryukova in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 to remain undefeated at 2-0 this weekend. 
 
The Broncos who ended the day in the loss column were Milena Toseva who fell 6-4, 6-2; Teal Vosburgh suffered a three-set defeat 5-7, 6-4, 6-0; while Kaitlyn Brown went down 6-3, 6-0.   
 
The start times for Sunday have been changed, Boise State will be back in action starting at 9 a.m. when the Broncos face Washington State in doubles. The Jack Taylor Classic will conclude with singles matches against Weber State at 11 a.m. at the Appleton Tennis Center.
