Bronco Women's Tennis Ends Season with 4-1 Loss to Kentucky in NCAA First Round

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Boise State women’s tennis team ended their outstanding 2008 season on Friday, dropping to No. 23-ranked University of Kentucky, 4-1, in their NCAA First Round match at Vanderbilt University’s Currey Tennis Center. The No. 44-ranked Broncos fell to 20-7 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 16-9 on the season and advance to Saturday’s NCAA Second Round.

Qualifying for their second straight NCAA tournament, the No. 3-seeded Broncos fell to the No. 2-seeded Wildcats, falling in the first round in back-to-back appearances. Boise State gained a big advantage during doubles play, winning two of the three matches to clinch the doubles point. Kentucky looked as if they were going to win the doubles point when Megan Broderick and Alaina Trgovich defeated Laura Baum and Jana Mackova, 8-2, in the No. 2 spot. The Broncos fought back to snag wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches to clinch the doubles competition. Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk defeated Sarah Wostmann and Whitney Spencer, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles match to bring the doubles competition to a tie. Causing an 8-6 upset in the No. 1 doubles spot, Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach knocked off Kentucky’s No. 37-ranked Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston.

Clawing their way back, the Wildcats won four straight singles matches to clinch the 4-1 team win. UK’s Escamilla was the first Wildcat to pick up a win, defeating Kokoulina, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match. Spencer was the next to pick up a win, downing Baum, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 6 position. In the No. 4 spot, Johnston defeated Wlodarczyk, 6-3, 6-4 while Wostmann defeated Jochimsen 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the No. 3 match.

Two singles matches remained unfinished when Kentucky clinched the team title. Bronco Stacey Housley had a one-set lead over Lauren Meier, 7-6 (3), 3-5 in the No. 5 match before play was ceased. In the No. 1 singles match. Broderick and Thongdach were tied one set each (6-2, 5-7) when play was ceased.

With the loss the Broncos conclude their 2008 season with a 20-7 record. Although the season got off to a rocky start with a 5-4 record, the Broncos turned the season into one of Boise State’s best season in history. Their turn-around success included a 14-3 run to conclude the season and allow them to qualify for the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.
