Thongdach and Megale Earn Bids to NCAA Individual Championships

BOISE, Idaho - On Wednesday (May 5) Boise State's Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale learned that they will both represent the Bronco women's tennis team at the 2010 NCAA Individual National Championships, which will be held May 26-31 in Athens, Ga. Thongdach received an at-large selection to the singles tournament, while Thongdach and Megale earned an automatic bid in doubles.

Thongdach is one of 45 at-large selections to the 64 player singles tournament. She joins an elite group in Boise State women's tennis history as just the third player to qualify to nationals individually in singles. Renate Stoop was the last Boise State women's tennis player to do so in 2001. In total, this will mark the fourth time the Broncos have been represented in singles at the individual championships.

Thongdach heads into the NCAA Championships with an 18-8 record in dual matches having played at No. 1 singles the entire season for Boise State. Thongdach earned WAC Player of the Year honors after helping the Broncos win the first Western Athletic Conference title in program history.

Thongdach and Megale also join an exclusive Boise State women's tennis club as a pair, becoming just the second Bronco doubles team to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships. The only other Boise State women's tennis doubles team to achieve the feat was Gayleen McManus and Anita Pearson in 1997. Thongdach and Megale were one of 16 automatic qualifiers to the 32 team tournament.

The duo was exceptional for Boise State this spring playing to a 20-6 overall record in dual matches. Their strong play at No. 1 doubles for the Broncos earned Thongdach and Megale first-team All-WAC honors.

Before turning their attention on the individual tournament, however, No. 47 ranked Boise State is preparing for the 2010 NCAA Team National Championships. The Broncos, who earned an automatic bid after winning the WAC tournament, will meet No. 21 Iowa in South Bend, Ind. on May 14 (Friday). Boise State's first-round dual is scheduled for 10 a.m.
