Broncos Top Spartans to Advance to Semifinals
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 70 ranked Boise State women's tennis team punched its ticket to the semifinal round of the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Boise State University, Thursday (April 28), as the Broncos knocked off No. 9 seed San Jose State, 4-0, at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Center.
Along with earning a spot in Friday's (April 29) semifinal round Boise State (16-7 overall, 5-1 WAC) also saw history made on Thursday, as head coach Beck Roghaar set the school record for most wins by a first-year coach. Roghaar entered the day tied with Jim Moortgat (15-11; 1995-96) and Mike Eddles (15-9; 1992-93) but managed to capture sole possession of the record thanks to an impressive outing by the women in both singles and doubles.
The Broncos, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, earned a pair of shutout victories in doubles competition to gain an early 1-0 advantage over the Spartans (8-13). Boise State would keep its momentum going in singles with three quick wins to complete the 4-0 sweep.
Elyse Edwards and Sonia Klamczynska got things rolling for the Broncos at No. 2 doubles with an 8-0 win over Chau Truong and Anna Guzman. Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo managed to clinch the doubles point next at No. 3 as they topped Christine Nguyen and Kalin Eshelman, 8-0.
Marlena Pietzuch wasted little time extending the team score to 2-0 at the start of singles competition with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Guzman at No. 5. Edwards would put the dual win within reach shortly thereafter at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Olivia Marshall.
Klamczynska clinched the quarterfinal win for Boise State next at No. 2 as she knocked off Emily Prescott, 6-0, 6-0.
With the win, the Broncos now advance to the semifinals to face No. 5 seed New Mexico State, which is coming off a 4-2 victory over No. 4 Idaho. Due to poor weather that is anticipated on Friday all of the men and women's matches will be moved to BOAS. Boise State is slated to meet the Aggies at noon.
Friday's WAC tournament action is now scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the first women's semifinals match between No. 2 Fresno State and No. 3 Nevada. The men's quarterfinal action will kickoff at 3 p.m. with a showdown between No. 3 Idaho and No. 6 Utah State. The No. 4 seed Bronco men's tennis team will wrap up the day two action by taking on No. 5 Hawai'i at 6 p.m.
