Broncos Head to WAC Championships with No. 1 Seed

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 43 ranked Boise State women' tennis team enters this weekend on a mission to make history, as the Broncos head to the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Fresno, Calif. looking to bring home their first ever conference tournament title.

After winning the regular season title for the first time in school history, the Broncos received the No. 1 seed at the 2010 WAC tournament. The women will try and use their top ranking to help push past a streak of four consecutive runner-up finishes at the conference championships.

The WAC Championships...

Boise State enters this weekend (April 30 - May 2) with the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season 8-0 against conference opponents. The Broncos receive a first-round bye in the six-team tournament, which means they will open their weekend on Saturday (May 1) at 11 a.m. (CST) in the semifinal round. The women will face the winner of No. 4 Hawai'i and No. 5 Idaho.

Boise State is still in the mix for an at-large berth in the NCAA championships, but could secure an automatic spot by winning the conference tournament. The Broncos have made three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Last time they were out...

The Broncos enter this weekend full of confidence after capping off their regular season schedule with a trio of wins back on April 16-17. Boise State hosted Idaho, Utah State and Fresno State in a trio of WAC duals at the Appleton Tennis Center.

The Broncos started the weekend in dominating fashion with a 5-2 win over Idaho and a 4-0 win over Utah State. Boise State capped its' senior weekend off with a huge 4-3 win over Fresno State. The win over Fresno State held great significance because it marked just the second win ever for the Broncos over the Bulldogs. The only other time Boise State beat Fresno State was in 1995.

National Rankings...

Boise State dropped one spot to No. 43 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings despite not having played a dual in over a week. The Broncos do join No. 74 Nevada as the only two WAC teams currently ranked in the ITA top-75, however.

Boise State is led by senior Pichittra Thongdach, who heads to the WAC Championships ranked No. 51 in singles. She has also moved up four spots with teammate Lauren Megale to a No. 45 national ranking in doubles this week.
