Bronco Women Drop Heartbreaker to Fresno State in WAC Championship Match

HONOLULU, Hawaii Boise State’s women’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker of a match to No. 16-ranked Fresno State on Saturday afternoon in the 2009 Western Athletic Conference championship finals. The No. 36-ranked Broncos fell 4-3 to the Bulldogs, finishing second for the third time since joining the WAC in the 2002 season. The Broncos earned their closest ever finish to a championship title in the WAC.

Boise State was able to fight back from a 1-0 deficit after the doubles matches to earn a 3-2 lead over the Bulldogs with two singles matches remaining. The Broncos were up one set in both of the remaining singles matches, but the Bulldogs came back to earn wins in the No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches to clinch the WAC Championship title, 4-3.

In the doubles matches, No. 1-ranked Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova were able to down junior Pichittra Thongdach and sophomore Lauren Megale, 8-3, in the No. 1 match.
