Bronco Women Drop Heartbreaker to Fresno State in WAC Championship Match

HONOLULU, Hawaii Boise State’s women’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker of a match to No. 16-ranked Fresno State on Saturday afternoon in the 2009 Western Athletic Conference championship finals. The No. 36-ranked Broncos fell 4-3 to the Bulldogs, finishing second for the third time since joining the WAC in the 2002 season. The Broncos earned their closest ever finish to a championship title in the WAC.


Boise State was able to fight back from a 1-0 deficit after the doubles matches to earn a 3-2 lead over the Bulldogs with two singles matches remaining. The Broncos were up one set in both of the remaining singles matches, but the Bulldogs came back to earn wins in the No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches to clinch the WAC Championship title, 4-3.


In the doubles matches, No. 1-ranked Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova were able to down junior Pichittra Thongdach and sophomore Lauren Megale, 8-3, in the No. 1 match. The Bulldogs sealed the doubles point with a win in the No. 2 spot with No. 13-ranked Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe defeating freshman Vivien Silfany and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 8-5. The No. 3 match went unfinished since the Bulldogs clinched the doubles point.


Boise State came back fighting in the singles matches with senior Laura Baum clinching a huge 6-1, 6-1 win over Bruna Paes in the No. 6 match to tie up the team score at 1-1. The Bulldogs’ No. 66-ranked Kucerkova answered with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Silfany in the No. 3 match to put the Bulldogs up 2-1 in the team running.


The Broncos gave Fresno State a run for their money when they clinched the next two wins in the No. 4 and No. 1 matches. Junior Bianca Jochimsen fought to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Rowe in the No. 4 match while No. 80-ranked Thongdach earned a monumental upset win over No. 16-ranked Gloria in the No. 1 match, winning 6-1, 7-5. With the pair of wins, Boise State was just one point away from clinching the team win. Megale and Wlodarczyk were both up one set in their No. 2 and No. 5 matches, respectively, but the Bulldogs battled to win the final two sets of each match and clinch the team title.


Fresno State’s No. 25-ranked Petukhova was able to defeat Megale 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 match while Laura Pola earned a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 win in the No. 5 match defeat of Wlodarczyk.


Thongdach and Megale were each named to the 2009 WAC Women's Tennis All-Tournament team in singles and joined together as the only Broncos to be honored with the award in doubles play as well.


The Broncos move to 23-4 on the season, with two of their four losses coming to Fresno State in the past two weeks. Boise State placed second at the WAC tournament for the fourth straight year, falling to Fresno State each of those seasons.


Boise State will await the assignment of NCAA bids which are set to be announced at 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28 on ESPNews.
