Bronco Women Sweep Nevada, Advance to WAC Finals

HONOLULU, Hawaii The No. 36-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team earned their second straight 4-0 sweep of the 2009 Western Athletic Conference championship tournament on Friday afternoon, defeating No. 66-ranked Nevada in the first semifinal match. The Broncos clinched the doubles point as well as winning the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles matches to defeat the No. 3 seeded Wolf Pack and advance to the WAC finals on Saturday, April 25.

 

The No. 2 seeded Broncos earned wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to clinch the doubles point and push Boise State ahead 1-0 in the team running. Senior Laura Baum and junior Bianca Jochimsen were the first off the courts after defeating Lais Ogata and Florence De Vrye, 8-3, in the No. 3 match. Freshman Vivien Silfany and senior Klaudia Wlodarczyk were the second Bronco team to earn a doubles win, defeating Aodhnait Lombard and Caroline Stevens, 8-5, in the No. 2 match. Sophomore Lauren Megale and junior Pichittra Thongdach were fighting off Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk in the No. 1 match, ending the match ahead in an 8-7 battle for the win.

 

In singles play, Baum was the first to earn a win, putting the Broncos up 2-0. Baum was able to knock out a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lombard in the No. 6 match to start the Broncos out strong in singles play. Silfany finished just behind in the No. 3 match, defeating Mizyuk, 6-2, 6-1, and putting the Broncos up 3-0. Megale was able to finish off the match and clinch the team title with her 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over De Vrye in the No. 2 match. Thongdach, Jochimsen and Wlodarczyk were all up in their matches before the match was called due to the Broncos clinching the team win.

 

Boise State improves to 23-3 on the season as well as 9-1 in the WAC. The Broncos will play against the winner of the Fresno State vs. Hawaii semifinal being played late Friday.
