No. 40-ranked Women's Tennis Speeds into WAC Tournament Semifinals

Las Cruces, N.M. The No. 40-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team made quick work of Utah State in the quarterfinal round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at the New Mexico State University Aggie Tennis Center. The No. 2-seeded Broncos (19-5) clinched the team win when they hit a 4-0 match record against the No. 7-seeded Aggies (7-15).

The Broncos picked up their 13th win in 14 matches and improve to 4-0 against WAC opponents and a 5-1 neutral court record.

Boise State started out strong in doubles play, clinching wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots, allowing the No. 1 doubles match to cease unfinished. Broncos Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk easily downed Jennifer Johnson and Marie Livingston, 8-1, in the No. 3 spot. Boise State’s Laura Baum and Jana Mackova also ran past the Aggies’ Britney Watts and Taylor Perry in the No. 2 match, winning 8-3. The No. 54-ranked duo of Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach were at a 4-4 tie with Brianna Harris and Hailey Swenson in the No. 1 spot when doubles played was halted.

Three Broncos notched speedy wins in singles play to clinch the team title, 4-0. Boise State's Baum earned a win at the No. 5 spot, scoring a perfect 6-0, 6-0 match win over Bridgette Strickland. Mackova clinching a near perfect 6-0, 6-1 win over Livingston in the No. 6 spot. Boise State’s Wlodarczyk earned the final victory of the day, clinching the team win and bringing an end to the match. Wlodarczyk downed Watts of USU 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 position for the win.

Thongdach, Kokoulina, and Housley were playing at the No. 1, 2, and 4 spots, respectively, and were all well ahead in their singles matches when the Broncos clinched the team victory.

Boise State will prepare for their 12-noon semifinal match on Friday, April 25 against No. 3-seeded Nevada. The No. 71-ranked Wolfpack earned a 4-0 win over No. 6-seeded Idaho in their quarterfinal match on Thursday and improved to a 10-10 record. The Broncos and Wolfpack have only faced each other once during the 2008 season with the Broncos pulling out a 4-3 win in Reno, Nev. on April 13.
