Bronco Women Hold No. 2 Seed Heading into 2009 WAC Tennis Championships

BOISE, Idaho The No. 36-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team will take to the courts on Thursday playing in the first round of the 2009 Western Athletic Conference championship tournament. The Broncos (21-3) have earned the No. 2 seed in the WAC tournament and will face No. 7 seed Utah State in their first round match at noon on April 23.

 

Boise State holds a 7-1 record against WAC opponents, suffering their only loss to then-ranked No. 15 Fresno State this past weekend. The Broncos fell 6-1 to the Bulldogs who dropped one spot in this week’s Campbell’s/ITA National Rankings to No. 16. Boise State has earned sweeps over six of their eight conference opponents this season. The Broncos defeated Utah State, San Jose State, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Idaho and New Mexico State in 7-0 matches. Their only non-sweep win was in a 5-2 victory over Nevada who holds the No. 66 spot in this week’s rankings.

 

Boise State and Fresno State are the only two teams to hold individual national rankings. The Broncos’ Pichittra Thongdach holds the only spot for her team, sitting at No. 80 in the singles rankings. Fresno State’s Melanie Gloria sits at No. 16 in the singles rankings while Anastasia Petukhova is ranked No. 25 and Renata Kucerkova is ranked No. 66 in singles. In doubles, Kucerkova and Petukhova join as the No. 1-ranked team in the country while Gloria is joined by Tinest Rowe as the No. 13-ranked doubles team.

 

The WAC women’s tennis tournament, hosted by the University of Hawaii, will be held at the UH Tennis Complex April 23-25. Thursday’s matches will begin with a 9 a.m. play-in game featuring No. 8 seed San Jose State and No. 9 seed Louisiana Tech. The Broncos will play their first round match at noon on Thursday, and if they win, will advance to the semifinal round on Friday, playing the winner of the Nevada (No. 3 seed) and Idaho (No. 6 seed) at noon.
