Bronco Women Win First Round Match
BOISE, Idaho The Boise State University women’s tennis team defeated Utah State in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, April 20, at the Appleton Tennis Center.
The second-seeded Broncos defeated the Aggies of Utah State, the tournament’s seven seed, 4-0. The win marks the 13th consecutive victory for Boise State, with eight of the victories coming via shutout. The Broncos have shut out 11 of their opponents this season.
“We played well today, but we will need to play better tomorrow,” Head Coach Mark Tichenor said. “For us to continue our season, we have to keep winning. Hopefully tomorrow we will be more used to the crowd, have a little bit more focus, and get it dialed in.”
Just as they have done all season long, the Broncos dominated doubles competition. Winning each of the first two doubles matches, the Broncos have now posted 38 consecutive doubles victories, and have not lost a doubles point since March 5, at Washington State.
At the first doubles position, seniors Hadley MacFarlane and Megan Biorkman cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Aggies’ Lindsey Bennion and Andrea Barker, posting their 20th win of the spring. The duo is 29-6 on the season.
Junior Tiffany Coll and freshman Jana Mackova clinched the point for the Broncos, routing Dee-Dee Nelson and Courtney Anderson at the third position, 8-0. Mackova and Coll are now 15-2 this season and 11-2 in dual competition.
MacFarlane gave the Broncos their first singles victory, knocking off Jill Smith in straight sets at the second position, 6-1, 6-3. MacFarlane, now 31-9 this season, has won each of her last 14 matches.
With a straight-set victory over Barker at the No. 5 spot, Mackova put the Broncos in position to clinch the dual. Winning 6-2, 6-2, Mackova is now 25-12 this season.
Biorkman clinched the dual for the Broncos, winning 6-3, 6-3, over Bennion at the No. 1 position. With the straight-set victory, Biorkman improves to 21-14 on the season, and helped advance the Broncos to the second round.
The Broncos will host New Mexico State, the No. 3 seed, tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., at the Appleton Tennis Center in the first of two semi-final matches.
