Bronco Women Split in Final Regular Season Matches

LAS CRUCES, N.M. The No. 36-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team closed out their 2009 regular season on Saturday, going head-to-head with a pair of Western Athletic Conference schools on the campus of New Mexico State University. The Broncos first faced a very tough No. 15-ranked Fresno State, falling 6-1, Saturday morning. They rebounded to a 7-0 sweep over host team New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon to improve to an impressive 21-3 on the season.

 

The Broncos had a tough task ahead of them on Saturday morning, taking on powerhouse Fresno State in a 9 a.m. match. The Broncos were not able to handle the Bulldogs’ doubles team with two ranking in the Campbell’s/ITA National Team Rankings top-15. In the No. 1 singles match, No. 1-ranked Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova fought off a tough Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale of Boise State, winning 8-5. In the No. 2 match, No. 15-ranked Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe downed Boise State’s Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Vivien Silfany, 8-4. The Bulldogs were able to snag the sweep with Laura Pola and Danon Beatty defeating Laura Baum and Bianca Jochimsen, 8-6.

 

In singles play, the Bulldogs were fairly dominant, picking up five of the six wins. Boise State’s Baum earned the Broncos’ sole team point, defeating Beatty, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. No. 17-ranked Gloria downed No. 81-ranked Thongdach, 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 1 match while No. 29-ranked Petukhova defeated Megale, 6-2, 7-5, in the No. 2 match to help the Bulldogs go up 3-1 on the Broncos. In the No. 3 match, No. 69-ranked Kucerkova defeated Silfany, 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 while Rowe earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jochimsen in the No. 4 match. Pola was able to round out the Bulldogs team points with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Wlodarczyk in the No. 5 spot.

 

The loss was the first in WAC matches for the Broncos, posting a 6-1 WAC record after the Fresno State match.

 

The Broncos regrouped after only their third loss of the season and came back to earn a 7-0 win over New Mexico State in a 1:30 p.m. match.

 

Megale and Thongdach started out strong in doubles play, defeating Stephanie Eusebe and Isabel Kulaif, 8-4 in the No. 1 match. Clinching the doubles point for the Broncos, Wlodarczyk and Silfany held on for a 9-7 win in the No. 2 spot over Sophia Marks and Aleksa Costa. NMSU’s Laura Boguet and Natalia Salum Soto earned the Aggies’ sole doubles win, defeating Jana Mackova and Rocio Frej, 8-6 in the No. 3 match.

 

After doubles, the Broncos made a clean sweep of the Aggies with Baum leading the way. She picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Kulaif in the No. 6 spot. Megale earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over Boguet in the No. 2 match while Silfany picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win over Eusebe in the No. 3 spot to clinch the team title for Boise State. Wlodarczyk earned a 6-3, 0-6, 10-4 win over Soto in the No. 4 spot in the final fully played match of the day. No. 81-ranked Thongdach earned a win over Marks after she retired with a 2-6, 6-3 score in the No. 1 match. Jochimsen picked up a similar win after Costa retired with a score of 6-1, 2-1 in Boise State’s advantage.

 

The Broncos improved to 7-1 on the season in WAC matches after the pair on Saturday and an impressive 21-3 schedule. Boise State heads to Honolulu, Hawaii next week to play in the 2009 WAC Championships held April 23-25.
