Women's Tennis Clinches Regular Season WAC Title, Defeats Fresno State
BOISE, Idaho -- The No. 44-ranked Boise State women's tennis team closed out their 2010 home season on a high note Saturday (April 17) afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center. The Broncos (20-5, 7-0 WAC) earned a 4-3 win over Fresno State in their final home match and final regular season match of 2010.
Saturday's win kept the Broncos undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play giving Boise State the regular season title. Boise State earned only their second win in school history over the Bulldogs on Saturday, with the only other win over FSU coming in 1995 with a 6-3 win. The all-time record between the two schools now comes to a 10-2 record with Fresno State holding the lead.
The Bronco women started off the day on the right foot clinching the doubles point by winning all three matches. The No. 2 doubles team of Stephanie Jasper and Marlena Pietzuch defeated Fresno State's Bianca Modac and Melissa McQeen, 8-5, for the first win. In the No. 1 doubles match No. 55-ranked Lauren Megale and Pichittra Thongdach battled to a 9-7 win over FSU's Laura Pola and Renata Kucerkova to clinch the doubles point for Boise State. In the No. 3 match, Elyse Edwards and Bianca Jochimsen helped the Bronco doubles sweep with their 9-8 win over Anastasia Petukhova and Julia Gragera-Cano.
In singles play Boise State jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the team running with Edwards earning a 6-2, 6-1 win over Grager-Cano in the No. 5 match and Pietzuch pulling out an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Anna Mikhaylova in the No. 6 singles match.
Fresno State was then able to gain two team points with Modoc defeating Boise State's Jasper 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. No. 117-ranked Kucerkova was able to hold off No. 46-ranked Thongdach in the No. 1 singles match, winning 7-5, 6-2 and bringing the team score to a 3-2 Bronco lead.
Boise State's Megale was able to take the pressure off after a long battle for the No. 2 singles title. Megale defeated Pola 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the team win for Boise State and remain perfect against WAC opponents this season.
Fresno State's McQeen was able to sneak in one final team point for the Bulldogs with her win over Jochimsen in the No. 3 singles match 6-2, 7-5.
The Broncos conclude their 2010 regular season and now await the trip to the WAC Championship Tournament held in Fresno, Calif., April 30-May 2.
