No. 40 Boise State Defeats Utah State, 5-2

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 40 Boise State University women’s tennis team defeated Western Athletic Conference rival Utah State 5-2, Thursday, at the Appleton Tennis Center to improve 14-3 on the season.


With the victory Boise State’s runs its winning-streak to 11 consecutive matches against Utah State. The Broncos have also not lost in their previous 22 meetings with the school from Logan, Utah.


Boise State captured the doubles point and No. 3 through No. 6 singles to overcome Utah State.


Laura Baum and Jana Mackova collected their team-leading 22 doubles victory as they defeated Erin Monson and Lauren Monson at No. 1 doubles 8-4. The duo also collected its 11 victories in dual match play to lead the Broncos.


Bianca Jochimsen and Tiffany Coll made quick work of Bridgette Strickland and Dee-Dee Nelson at No. 3 doubles as the Bronco duo broke the Aggies’ serve four times en route to an 8-1 victory. Jochimsen and Coll improved to 19-3 overall (86 percent) and 12-1 in doubles (91 percent) to lead the team in winning-percentage in both categories.


Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Polina Kokoulina paired up to oust Brianna Harris and Courtney Anderson at No. 2 doubles 8-6 and secure the doubles point sweep for Boise State.


Stacey Housley captured the first singles point of the day for Boise State when she defeated Lauren Monson in straight sets 6-1 and 6-0. Up 3-0 in the first set, Houlsey dropped the next game to Monson to set the score at 3-1 but the Aggies’ No. 5 would not win another game as Housley rattled off nine consecutive games to win the match 6-1 and 6-0. With the win Housley collected her team-leading 26th singles victory and 13th in dual match play.


Senior Tiffany Coll won her 22nd match of the year as she defeated Strickland at No. 6 singles in straight sets 6-3 and 6-0. Coll began the first set down 2-3, but she broke Strickland’s next two serves and hit her own to take the match 6-4. In the second set, Coll would go on to shut out Strickland 6-0 as Coll won the final 10 games to collect the match point for Boise State.


Tatiana Ganzha, a 2006 All-WAC performer, played in her first dual match singles since last season’s WAC Championship and dominated Harris at No. 3 singles 6-1 and 6-2, to earn the clinching match point for Boise State as the team took a 4-0 lead over their conference foe.


Wlodarczyk earned her team-leading 15th victory in dual match play as she vanquished Nelson at No. 4 singles 6-1 and 6-2. With the win, Wlodarczyk improved her record to a perfect 10-0 at No. 4 singles while capturing another match point for Boise State.


The two Bronco losses came atop the order where both players lost in a super tiebreaker.


Jochimsen was down 3-0 in the first set at No. 1 singles but she battled back valiantly to break Anderson’s next two serves and go ahead 4-3 before taking the first set 7-6. After Jochimsen dropped the second set 2-6 the two players faced off in a super tiebreaker for the match point. Jochimsen jumped our to a 1-0 lead but Anderson battled back and tied the match at 4-4. After the two traded serves, Anderson got her run and won the super tiebreaker 10-6, denying Boise State the sweep.


Mackova had to deal with a tiebreaker on three occasions as she lost to Erin Monson at No. 2 singles 6-7, 7-6 and 10-7. This was the first time all season Mackova has played No. 2 singles. Mackova regularly plays No. 3 and owns a 12-2 record at that position.


The next match for the No. 40 Boise State women’s tennis team will be against New Mexico State Saturday, Apr. 14, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Appleton Tennis Center. Admission is free and free parking is available at the SUB during matches.
