Boise State Sweeps Friday Duals to Top WAC Standings
RUSTON, La. - The No. 44 ranked Boise State women's tennis team moved into sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference regular season standings, Friday (April 9), as the Broncos won a pair of conference duals in Ruston, La. to improve to 5-0 against WAC opponents this season.
Broncos Sweep Fifth Straight Opponent with 7-0 Win Over La Tech
After picking up a 7-0 win over San Jose State, Friday morning, Boise State (17-5) continued to roll in the night cap. The Broncos beat Louisiana Tech, 7-0, to remain the only WAC team with a perfect conference record heading into the final week of the regular season.
Against the Lady Techsters, Boise State scored an early 1-0 lead over La Tech with a sweep of the doubles matches for the second consecutive dual. No. 38 ranked Lauren Megale and Pichittra Thongdach beat Vivian ten Dolle and Rocio Juarez, 8-1, at No. 1 to give the Broncos an early advantage. Stephanie Jasper and Marlena Pietzuch then beat Maartje de Wit and Alena Erofeyeva, 8-2, at No. 2 to secure the doubles point.
Boise State cruised from there, sweeping the singles matches for the fifth consecutive dual. Following Friday, the last time the Broncos lost a singles match was on March 28 when Boise State suffered a 4-3 loss at UNLV. The women have yet to lose a singles match in WAC competition.
Megale got things rolling for the Broncos again, Friday evening, as she scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Erofeyeva in the No. 2 sinlges match. She was followed shortly after by Rocio Frej, who beat Laura Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5.
No. 38 ranked Thongdach captured the Bronco victory at No. 1, beating ten Dolle by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Jochimsen and Jasper also recorded wins to push the final score out to 7-0. Jochimsen knocked off de Wit, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3, while Jasper beat Juarez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4.
Boise State now turns its attention to a three dual home stand next Friday-Saturday (April 16-17), when the Broncos host Idaho, Utah State and Fresno State in a WAC regular season finale. The women will face Idaho and Utah State on Friday, before concluding the weekend against Fresno State.
Boise State Sweeps San Jose State, 7-0
Boise State won its first of two duals on Friday (April 9) in Ruston, La., as the Broncos took down San Jose State, 7-0, to remain perfect (4-0) in WAC competition.
The Broncos swept the doubles matches to gain an early 1-0 advantage over the Spartans. #38 ranked Lauren Megale and Pichittra Thongdach recorded the first doubles win for Boise State at No. 1, as the Bronco duo beat Kerri Kummer and Sandra Florea, 8-1. Elyse Edwards and Bianca Jochimsen secured the doubles point next at No. 2 with an 8-4 win over Anna Guzman and Chau Truong. Rocio Frej and Marlena Pietzuch completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Olivia Marshall and Jennifer Williams at No. 3.
Boise State continued to roll in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. Edwards extended the Bronco lead to 2-0 in the No. 4 singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Florea. Pietzuch followed that up with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Guzman at No. 5. Frej secured the Boise State win with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Williams at No. 6, giving the Broncos a 4-0 lead.
Thongdach (No. 38 ranked), Megale and Jochimsen all scored singles wins to complete the sweep. Thongdach beat Marshall, 6-4, 6-1, while Megale beat Truong, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Jochimsen beat Kummer, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3.
