Broncos Move to 4-0 in WAC Competition
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 57 ranked Boise State women's tennis team earned its fourth (4-0) win of the season in Western Athletic Conference competition, Saturday (April 9) afternoon, as the Broncos knocked off New Mexico State, 5-2, in their first of two duals in Reno, Nev. this weekend.
Boise State gained an early advantage over the Aggies (9-6) thanks to a sweep of doubles action. The Broncos secured another four wins in singles competition to clinch the team victory and improve to 14-6 overall this spring.
Lauren Megale and Marlena Pietzuch got things rolling for Boise State in doubles, as the duo managed an 8-5 win over Isabela Kulaif and Annemieke Witte at No. 1. Elyse Edwards and Sonia Klamczynska would clinch the doubles point for the Broncos next at No. 2 with an 8-6 win over Manon Sylvain and Jodie Williams.
With the 1-0 advantage already at hand Boise State didn't let up in doubles, as Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo won at No. 3 to secure the doubles sweep. Jasper and Vo knocked off Ginet Pinero and Ros-Polly Nguyen, 8-6, to give the Broncos full momentum heading into singles play.
Megale would extend the Boise State lead to 2-0 early on in singles after Kulaif was forced to retire, trailing 6-3, 2-1. Edwards would put the team win within reach for the Broncos next at No. 4 as she topped Witte, 6-2, 6-3.
Pietzuch wasted little time clinching the dual victory, as she took down Williams, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5 to give Boise State the decisive fourth point on the day. Morgan Basil would extend the Broncos final team total to five points with a win last at No. 6 as she beat Nguyen, 6-1, 6-4.
New Mexico State managed to narrow the final score to 5-2 with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, but the rally was too little too late.
Saturday marked the first of two conference duals for Boise State this weekend as the Broncos are now set to face Nevada, Sunday (April 10), morning. Boise State will meet the Wolf Pack at 11 a.m. (PST).
