Broncos Fall 5-2 to San Diego State in MW Action
US AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Sandy Vo and Marlena Pietzuch each recorded wins for Boise State Saturday morning as the Broncos fell 5-2 to San Diego State in a Mountain West women's tennis match at U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. Boise State lost the doubles point and was down 3-0 in the team score before Vo and Pietzuch attempted to rally their team, earning singles wins as the Broncos battled to get back into the match against the No. 48 ranked Aztecs on a neutral court. The loss drops Boise State to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in conference action, while SDSU moved to 8-7 and 4-1 in league.
Boise State lost the doubles points 2-1 with Vo and Morgan Basil recording the lone victory with a hard fought 9-8 (3) tiebreak win over the Aztecs No. 2 duo of Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar. Marlena and Manuela Pietzuch fell at No. 1 doubles 8-6 , while the team of Sonia Klamczynska and Kaitlyn Brown went down by the score of 8-5 at the third doubles position.
Down one heading into the singles portion of the match, Boise State needed to get wins in four of the six matches. SDSU increased its advantage to 3-0 when Boise State's Klamczynska and Basil lost in straight sets at No. 1 and 4 singles respectively. Klamczynska lost 6-1, 6-2 to the Aztecs' Wais to make the score 2-0 as the senior fell to 16-12 on the year. That was followed by a 6-4, 6-3 defeat by Basil on court four, snapping her team-best six-match win streak as she goes to 20-12 in singles this season.
Vo pulled the Broncos within two when she defeated Laura Antonana Iriarte in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (5) on court three. The sophomore moved to 19-12 and 12-6 this spring. Marlena Pietzuch cut the Boise State deficit further when she followed Vo's victory with a hard fought three-set win 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-0. Pietzuch improved to 21-12 overall and 11-7 this spring.
San Diego State put the match out by sweeping the final two singles contests on courts five and six. The Aztecs' Kristin Buth gave her team the victory with a two set victory over the Broncos' Kaitlyn Brown 6-1, 6-1. Shortly after, SDSU's Sierra Ellison handed Boise State's Manuela Pietzuch a tough three-set loss at No. 5 singles by a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6) tally to make the final team score 5-2 in favor of the Aztecs.
Boise State will be back in action Sunday morning at the Air Force Academy when they take on No. 37 UNLV at 10:00 a.m. (Mountain).
