Broncos Earn Perfect Ending to Home Season with 7-0 Win over Idaho

BOISE, Idaho The No. 38-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team took to their home courts for the final time this season on Sunday, facing Western Athletic Conference opponent and in-state rival, Idaho. The Broncos ended their home season on a high note, earning a perfect 7-0 win over the Vandals, notching their 20th win of the season and earning their 13th straight win. The Broncos improve to 20-2 on the season as well as 6-0 in WAC matches. The Vandals fall to 14-4 on the season and end an 11 match winning streak.

 

The dual between the Broncos and Vandals was tough, although Boise State came out on top in every match. In doubles play, freshman Rocio Frej and junior Bianca Jochimsen picked up an 8-3 win over Barbara Maciocha and Jana Siwa in the No. 3 spot to get the ball rolling. Shortly after, No. 73-ranked Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale topped Idaho’s Daniela Cohen and Maria Perevoshichikov in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-4. The Broncos were able to hold on to the doubles sweep when Vivien Silfany and Klaudia Wlodarczyk downed Alexandra Ulesanu and Yvette Ly, 8-6 in the No. 2 match.

 

In singles play, senior Laura Baum earned a perfect ending to her home-court career, defeating Siwa, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 match. Silfany had a near perfect match as well in the No. 3 match, defeating Ulesanu, 6-1, 6-0, to help the Broncos to a 3-0 team lead. Megale helped to clinch the match for the Broncos with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Silvia Irimescu in the No. 2 match while senior Jana Mackova ended her home-court career with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Natalie Kirch in the No. 6 match. In the No. 1 singles match, No. 72-ranked Thongdach had to battle early match struggles to come back in a successful 6-4, 6-4 win over Perevoshchikov helping the Broncos to a 6-0 lead. Senior Wlodarczyk closed out the perfect senior day with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Barbara Maciocha to help the Broncos to a 7-0 team victory.

 

The Broncos complete their home season with the win over Idaho and will have two regular season matches remaining before they head to the WAC Championships. Boise State will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to take on Fresno State and New Mexico State on April 18 in their final regular season matches. They then head to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the 2009 WAC Championships held April 23-25.
