Boise State Opens WAC Play 2-0
RENO, Nev. - The No. 45 ranked Boise State women's tennis team opened up its Western Athletic Conference schedule in successful fashion, Saturday (April 3), as the Broncos earned wins over New Mexico State and No. 65 Nevada in Reno, Nev. to improve to 14-5 overall this spring.
Boise State opened the day with a 4-0 win over NMSU before taking down UNR, 7-0. The Broncos were perfect on the day, finishing without a loss in either singles of doubles competition.
Broncos Run Past Nevada, 7-0
The Broncos used their momentum from a 4-0 win over New Mexico State, Saturday morning, to run past Nevada for a 7-0 win. Boise State swept the doubles matches, which earned the Broncos an early 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The No. 38 ranked doubles team of Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale recorded the first win of the dual for Boise State as the Bronco duo beat Maria Mizyuk and Sophie Stevens, 8-3. Boise State would have to work hard for its final two doubles wins, but finally prevailed with 9-7 victories at both No. 2 and No. 3. Stephanie Jasper and Marlena Pietzuch beat Lais Ogata and Emma Verberne, 9-7, at No. 2, while Elyse Edwards and Bianca Jochimsen took down Florence De Vrye and Aline Laurioux, 9-7, at No. 3.
The Broncos never slowed down heading into singles competition as the women rolled to a sweep of the singles matches, which included five wins in straight sets. Boise State's only third set win came at No. 1, where No. 38 Thongdach beat Mizyuk, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
Boise State Tops New Mexico State, 4-0
Boise State opened up its Saturday double header with a 4-0 win over New Mexico State in the Broncos first dual against a WAC opponent so far this season. The women gained an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point and were able to finish the Aggies off with wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
In doubles, No. 38 ranked Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale scored the first Boise State win by beating Isabela Kulaif and Aleksa Costa, 8-5, at No. 1. The Broncos clinched the doubles point next with an 8-0 win by Bianca Jochimsen and Elyse Edwards over Natalia Salum and Ginet Pinero at No. 3.
Thongdach extended Boise State's lead with a win in the first singles match of the day, after Sophia Marks was forced to retire due to injury after the first set. No. 38 ranked Thongdach led the match, having won the first set 7-6.
Stephanie Jasper gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead in the dual with a win at No. 4, as she beat Costa, 6-0, 6-0. Marlena Pietzuch secured the 4-0 win for Boise State next at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Pinero.
This weekend the Broncos kicked off a stretch of eight straight duals against WAC opponents. Boise State travels to Ruston, La. next weekend to face Hawai'i, San Jose State and Louisiana Tech, Thursday-Friday. The Broncos then return home April 16-17 (Friday-Saturday) to host a trio of WAC duals when Idaho, Utah State and Fresno State come to town.
