No. 36 Boise State Women's Tennis Extends Streak to 11 With Wins Over Portland State and Utah State

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State women’s tennis team ended their fantastic 2008 regular season on Friday topping Portland State and Utah State to improve to 17-4 and extend their winning streak to 11 dating back to March 1. The Broncos first topped Portland State (5-14) in a 10 a.m. match, 6-1, and earned a perfect 7-0 win over Western Athletic Conference opponent Utah State (2-8) to finish on a high note for the regular season. The Broncos’ win over Utah State improves their WAC record to 2-0 this season.

Concluding the regular season, the head coach Mark Tichenor and his team acknowledged three seniors who have played their final matches on Boise State courts. Seniors Polina Kokoulina, Stacey Housley, and Jen Wencel were all honored before their final regular season match against Utah State Friday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center.

In their first match of the day, the Broncos were able to quickly take the lead when Pichittra Thongdach and Klaudia Wlodarczyk teamed to defeat Lacey Pflibsen and Molly Knox, 8-0, in the No. 1 match. Boise State’s Housley and Jana Mackova also earned an 8-0 victory over Caitlin Stocking and Alyssa Ferry in the No. 2 match to clinch the doubles point. Portland State was able to sneak away with one victory in doubles play with Anya Dalkin and Stephanie Fuchs topping Laura Baum and Jen Wencel, who saw her first action of the season, 8-6.

In singles play, Thongdach cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Pflibsen in the No. 1 spot while Wlodarczyk toppled Fuchs with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. Housley earned an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory over Knox in the No. 3 spot while Mackova was nearly perfect against Dalkin, winning 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot. Baum downed Ferry 6-1, 6-3 to give the Broncos six team points. The Vikings were able to earn one win on the day when Boise State defaulted a match at the No. 6 position.

In their second dual of the day, Boise State came out perfectly winning all nine matches. The Broncos’ Baum and Wlodarczyk earned the first win of the afternoon, downing Britney Watts and Bridgette Strickland, 8-1, in the No. 2 doubles match. Two of the three Boise State seniors, Housley and Wencel teamed in the No. 3 doubles spot to defeat Taylor Perry and Jennifer Johnson, 8-5, while Kokoulina and Mackova fought off Brianna Harris and Hailey Swenson in the No. 1 spot for an 8-6 win.

In singles play, Kokoulina earned her final regular season victory as a Bronco with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over Harris in the No. 1 position. At the No. 4 spot, Housley also earned her final regular season win, with a 6-2, 6-2 score over Watts. In her first-played singles match of the season, Wencel closed out her career as a Bronco with a satisfying 6-4, 6-2 win over Marie Livingston in the No. 6 spot. Boise State’s Wlodarczyk downed Swenson 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot while Mackova earned a 6-3, 4-1 (ret.) win over Strickland after the Aggie pulled out due to injury in the No. 3 match. At No. 5, Baum closed out her regular season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Perry.

Ending her career at Boise State, Wencel had a career record o 11-1 in singles play and 5-2 in doubles play. Housley, who will play in post-season matches for the Broncos, has totaled a 77-23 singles record and a 23-7 doubles record over her four years at Boise State. Kokoulina, who will also see action in the post-season, has tallied a career record of 38-23 in singles play and 42-15 in doubles play in two seasons at Boise State.

The Broncos will now take a few weeks off from competition to prepare for the WAC Championships held in Las Cruces, New Mexico Thursday, April 24 through Saturday, April 26.
