Upset Bid Falls Short Against Wyoming

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The match went down to the wire in Fort Collins, Colo., before Boise State University's women's tennis team came up on the short end of a 4-3 score to 56th ranked University of Wyoming Saturday afternoon. The Broncos opened by sweeping the doubles points including the Pietzuch sisters - Marlena and Manuela - defeating the 45th ranked team nationally. The contest went to the fifth singles match completed before the outcome was decided in the Cowgirls favor. Along the way Boise State's Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil collected singles victories. Boise State falls to 7-9 on the year and 1-2 in Mountain West play. The Broncos will continue the trip to Fort Collins tomorrow afternoon when they take on Colorado State University at noon.

"I am really proud of the way the team battled today against Wyoming," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "We swept doubles and came up just short of splitting the singles matches which would of clinched the match for us. It was a well contested match against a very good nationally ranked Wyoming team."

The contest opened with a tight team battle in doubles. The Broncos came away with an upset victory on court one when Marlena and Manuela Pietzuch defeated Wyoming's 45th ranked duo of Veronica Popovica and Simona Synkova 8-6 to give Boise State the first win in doubles on the day.

"It was great to see Marly (Marlena Pietzuch) and Manny (Manuela Pietzuch) play a very solid match and beat the No. 45 team in the country," said Roghaar. "It was nice to see them get a good win over a very tough and experienced team that won the Mountain Regional championship last fall."

The last two pairs went to tiebreakers before the Broncos came away with the sweep. The second doubles match to finish was at No. 2 where Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil went toe-to-toe with Wyoming's Sasa Nemcova and Alexandra Covacs before getting the 9-8 (2) win to clinch the doubles team point for Boise State. Basil and Vo improved to a team-best 11-5 in doubles this spring and 14-8 overall.

Shortly after that Sonia Klamczynska and Kaitlyn Brown recorded the win at the number three position by an identical 9-8 (2) score over Silvya Zhelyazkova and Jessica Paricher.

"Both teams (No. 2 and 3) recorded huge wins for us in crunch time,"  commented Roghaar. "Morgan and Sandy took a big step forward today closing out the tiebreaker in a clutch situation, especially after we let one slip away from us last week in a very similar situation."

Up one after doubles, Boise State looked to take advantage of the momentum they created with the point. However, it was the Cowgirls who struck first in singles with Jessica Paricher taking the No. 5 contest by a 6-2, 6-0 score over Manuela Pietzuch to tie the team score at one apiece. The Broncos fell behind 2-1 when court six went to Wyoming as well when Silvya Zhelyazkova downed Kaitlyn Brown in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Sandy Vo brought the Broncos even with her 6-4, 6-1 victory on court three over Alexandra Covacs. Vo improved to 17-12 on the year and 10-6 this spring.

Unfortunately, the Cowgirls regained the advantage a few minutes later when Veronica Popovica tallied a 6-4, 6-2 when over Sonia Klamczynska at No. 1 singles.

The decisive singles match came down to court two where Wyoming clinched the team victory with a hard fought 6-3, 6-4 battle over the Broncos' Marlena Pietzuch.

The match concluded with Boise State's Morgan Basil winning her fifth-consecutive match to close the final team deficit to 4-3. Basil went to a set two tiebreaker before recording a straight-set 6-4, 7-6 (1) win over Sasa Nemcova at No. 4 singles. The sophomore is now 19-11 on the year and 11-5 this spring.
