Bronco Winning Streak Ends Against UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Boise State women's tennis team experienced a rare set back at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev., Sunday (March 28) afternoon, as the No. 47 ranked Broncos saw their streak of nine straight duals come to an end with a 4-3 loss to No. 59 UNLV.

Heading into Sunday's match, Boise State hadn't lost since Feb. 20 when the Broncos dropped a 5-2 decision to Marshall. Since that loss the women have rolled, winning nine straight including a six dual win stretch at home. Boise State finally met their match in the Lady Rebels, who entered Sunday on a 10 dual winning streak of their own.

UNLV jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over Boise State after winning the ever critical doubles point. Sunday marked the first time since Feb. 20 that the Broncos failed to win doubles. Against the Lady Rebels, Boise State opened doubles with a split at No. 1 and No. 2. With the decisive third match on the line, UNLV managed to outlast the Broncos as Nives Pavlovic and Adrienn Hidvegi beat Elyse Edwards and Bianca Jochimsen, 9-8 (7-5).

Trailing 1-0 after doubles Boise State needed a big performance in singles, but while the Broncos fought hard they would fall just short of the comeback. Boise State earned three singles wins, starting with Marlena Pietzuch's 6-1, 6-2 win against Rumyana Terzieva at No. 6. Lauren Megale then managed to score the Broncos second point of the dual with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win against No. 103 Jana Albers at No. 2.

Unfortunately for Boise State their run would end there as UNLV scored wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the upset. No. 48 ranked Pichittra Thongdach did close the final gap for the Broncos with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over No. 31 Kristina Nedeltcheva at No. 1, but it was too little too late.

With the loss Boise State falls to 12-5 on the season. Next on the schedule for the Broncos is a trip to Reno, Nev. where the women will face their first two Western Athletic Conference duals of the season. Boise State will meet New Mexico State in a Saturday (April 3) morning dual before squaring off with Nevada Saturday evening.
