Broncos Open Mountain West Play on the Road

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State women's tennis team (6-7, 0-0 MW) will open its first ever Mountain West campaign this weekend when the Broncos travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to face both the University of New Mexico and TCU.  The action begins on Saturday, March 24, when Boise State takes on the New Mexico Lobos (7-5, 0-0 MW) at 2:00 p.m. (Mountain). The weekend concludes Sunday morning, March 25, when Boise State meets the TCU  Horned Frogs (7-3, 0-0 MW) at 9:00 a.m.

What Happened Last Week - The Broncos are coming off a shortened week that saw two of three matches canceled because of inclement weather. Boise State opened the week with a 5-2 home loss to Washington State University on Wednesday at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. The Broncos won two of the three doubles matches to claim the point for Boise State versus the Cougars. The No. 1 doubles team of Sonia Klamczynska and Marlena Pietzuch won 8-6 while the No. 2 duo of Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil recorded a 9-8 (3) win. Morgan Basil was the only Bronco to get a win in singles with a straight set 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 position.

Matches Canceled -
Bad weather and the lack of available indoor facilities forced Boise State to cancel its trip to northern California last weekend where the Broncos were scheduled to play at Saint Mary's College on Saturday, March 17, and at the University of San Francisco on Sunday, March 18.

Looking at Boise State's leaders - Marlena Pietzuch leads the Broncos with a 19-9 singles record on the year and 9-4 mark (2-3 at No. 1 and 7-1 at No. 2) this spring. Sonia Klamczynska is 14-9 overall 6-5 (4-3 at No. 1) this spring, followed by Morgan Basil who is 16-11 overall on the year and Sandy Vo who is 15-11.

Looking at New Mexico -
The Lobos enter the weekend with a 7-5 overall record this season. They are coming off a pair of road victories last week at Stockton, Calif., where they defeated Fresno Pacific 4-3 and their host the University of the Pacific 4-2. The team is led by Michaela Bezdickova who is 16-6 in singles overall and 8-4 this spring playing at the No. 1 position. Susanna Kuuttila is 7-5 this spring playing No. 2 singles.

Looking at No. 64 TCU - The Horned Frogs are ranked 64th nationally by ITA and bring a 7-3 overall mark into the weekend in Albuquerque. TCU will open MW play Saturday when they take on the U.S. Air Force Academy in New Mexico prior to its encounter with Boise State on Sunday.  The Horned Frogs are coming into the weekend off a pair of road defeats losing 5-2 at No. 14 Alabama on March 18, followed by a 5-2 defeat at No. 40 Florida State on Wednesday, March 21. Stefanie Tan leads TCU with a 15-6 overall singles record and a 8-3 mark (5-1 at No. 1) this spring. The doubles team of Olivia Smith and Millie Nichols is ranked No. 59 with a 12-5 overall record this year.

Scoring Early -
The doubles point has been a crucial one for the Broncos this season. The team lost its first match this year when winning the opening point in the loss versus Washington State and is now 6-1, the Broncos are 0-6 when they do not take the doubles point.

Best in the West -
Boise State's Marlena Pietzuch was named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 7-14 after going a combined 4-0 last weekend to help propel Boise State to home victories over Eastern Washington (W, 7-0) and Idaho (W, 5-2), respectively. Pietzuch made her debut at the No. 1 spot against Idaho, defeating Victoria Lozano in straight sets.

2012 Team - The Boise State women's tennis team is coming off a 17-8 season and a 5-1 record in the WAC. The Broncos advanced to the conference finals but fell 4-3 to Fresno State. Lone senior Sonia Klamczynska returns to lead a young Bronco team that includes one freshman and two sophomores. Manuela Pietzuch joins the Boise State roster after transferring from Virginia Commonwealth and joins her sister Marlena.
