Bronco Women Battle to 4-3 Win Over St. Mary's
MORAGA, Calif. The No. 50-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team continued their winning streak, defeating St. Mary’s of California, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos improved their streak to nine straight wins as well as improving to a 15-2 season record.
The Broncos began with a solid doubles competition, winning all three matches to clinch the doubles point. Junior Pichittra Thongdach and freshman Lauren Megale earned an 8-3 win over Alex Poorta and Claire Soper in the No. 1 doubles match. Freshman Vivien Silfany and senior Klaudia Wlodarczyk defeated Nienke Strijbus and Anna Chikhikvishvli in the No. 2 match while senior Laura Baum and junior Bianca Jochimsen defeated Erin Young and Marah Calvo in the No. 3 match, both winning 8-5.
In singles play, the Gaels made a comeback, winning three of the six singles matches. The Broncos were able to hold off St. Mary’s, however, picking up wins in the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches. No. 83-ranked Thongdach fought off Poorta in the No. 1 match, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Silfany battled to a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win over Soper in the No. 3 match. Wlodarczyk earned a tough 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Strijbis in the No. 5 match to help the Broncos to a four-point team total.
St. Mary’s earned a win by Chikhikvishvli over Megale in the No. 2 match, 7-6, 7-6, while also picking up a two-set win with Sabina Gunnarsson defeating Jochimsen, 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot. Calvo rounded out the Gaels’ wins with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 win over Baum in the No. 6 singles match.
The Broncos continue their weekend in Northern California with a 1 p.m. Sunday match against the University of Pacific. They will remain in California for the week, ending their spring break trip at the University of San Diego on Thu., Mar. 26. Boise State’s final home matches for the women will take place on Apr. 3 and 4 at the Appleton Tennis Center when they will host Louisiana Tech, Hawai’i and Idaho in duals.
