Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 43 ranked Boise State women's tennis team extended its' dual winning streak to six straight, Friday evening (March 19), as the Broncos knocked off Mountain Region opponent University of Denver, 4-3, in a hard fought match at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise.
Boise State took advantage of an early lead after winning the doubles point by only needing to win three of six singles matches against the Pioneers. Turned out the Broncos would need all they could get as Denver pushed Boise State all the way down to the wire.
The Broncos struck first with a sweep of the doubles matches. No. 33 ranked Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale recorded the first Boise State doubles win with an 8-5 victory over Ute Schnoy and Sophia Bergner at No. 1. They were followed at No. 2 by Stephanie Jasper and Marlena Pietzuch who beat Anna-Betty Kadar and Julia Bauregger 8-7. Bianca Jochimsen and Elyse Edwards capped off the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-3 win over Mikele Smith and Lorinda Boothman to secure the doubles point.
Boise State wasn't able to produce quite as decisive of a performance in singles, but the Broncos were able to win enough to fend off a late Denver run. Boise State won at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the victory. Jochimsen earned the first Bronco win at No. 3 as she beat Bergner, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. She was followed by Pietzuch, who took down Kadar 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
Rocio Frej earned the final Boise State win of the day, which proved to be the difference maker, as Frej beat Smith 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Broncos improve to 9-4 overall this season, which includes their current six dual winning streak. Boise State has been dominant against Mountain Region opponents as well, with a 7-0 record to date. The Broncos will look to ride their recent hot streak as they conclude a six dual home stretch this Sunday against the University of San Diego. The dual is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and will be held at the Appleton Tennis Center, weather permitting.
