No. 59 Boise State Women's Tennis Upsets No. 35 St. Mary's College

BOISE, Idaho The No. 59 Boise State women’s tennis team earned a solid upset win over No. 35 Saint Mary’s College Sunday afternoon, topping the Gaels, 4-3. The Gaels (8-3) were the highest ranked team the Broncos (9-4) have faced this season, but Boise State kept their undefeated home streak alive with the win, improving their home season to 7-0 this spring.

The Broncos earned the crucial doubles point which gave them the 4-3 win after earning victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. No. 58 Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach earned the biggest win differential in doubles play with an 8-4 win over St. Mary’s Jessica Hoath and Nienke Strijbis in the No. 1 position. BoiseState’s Laura Baum and Jana Mackova earned an 8-6 win over Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza in the No. 2 doubles match to seal the doubles point for Boise State. The Gaels’ Alex Poorta and Claire Soper earned one win for St. Mary’s in doubles play, topping Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 8-5, in the No. 3 spot.

In singles play, the Gaels looked to make a comeback winning at the No. 1, 2, and 3 spots. The Broncos, however, earned wins at the No. 4, 5, and 6 spots to earn the 4-3 team win.

At the No. 4 singles spot, Wlodarczyk defeated Calvo of St. Mary’s 7-5, 6-1 while Boise State’s Stacey Housley topped Erin Young, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot for two quick Boise State points. The Broncos’ Mackova earned the match clinching win at the No. 5 spot defeating Ordoveza 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

St. Mary’s was able to earn their first point at the No. 2 position with Poorta topping Kokoulina 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The Gaels’ Soper fought off Boise State’s Jochimsen for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win in the No. 3 singles match. Hoath was the final player to earn a victory on the day, battling through a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 match with Thongdach to win the No. 1 spot.

The Broncos are now 4-4 against ITA ranked teams and also boast a 2-0 record over nationally ranked teams at home. Boise State will continue their season on the road when they head to Wichita, Kansas to compete in the Shocker Classic hosted by Wichita State University. The Broncos will first face Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday, March 15 at 11 a.m. and will follow with a 10 a.m. match on Sunday, March 16 against Wichita State. The Broncos’ home season will continue on April 5 when they host the Boise State Spring Invite. The Invite will be the final home matches of the season for the Broncos.
