No. 59 Bronco Women Top San Diego 5-2, Continue Undefeated Home Season

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State women’s tennis team extended their undefeated home record to 6-0 on Friday afternoon when they defeated the University of San Diego, 5-2 at the Boise State Appleton Tennis Center. Boise State earned the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches before going on to win four of the six doubles matches. With the win, the Broncos improve to 8-4 on the season.

Starting out with solid doubles play, Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach proved why they are rated No. 58 in the nation, topping the Toreros’ Justine Perl and Monica Wiesener, 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles match. Boise State’s Laura Baum and Jana Mackova earned a No. 2 match win in similar fashion, topping Helene Lindstrand and Samantha Mouly, 8-2. Sweeping the doubles matches, Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk teamed together to defeat Alexandra Demidova and Tammy Kevey, 8-4, in the No. 3 match.

In singles play, Thongdach started the Broncos out on a high note with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lindstrand at the No. 1 spot. Kokoulina earned a big win over Wiesener, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles match, helping the Broncos to a 3-0 lead in team scoring.

USD’s Demidova was next to earn a win, topping Wlodarczyk in the No. 4 singles match, 6-1, 6-2, to set the team score to 3-1 in favor of the Broncos. Boise State’s Stacey Housley put a halt on any of the Toreros’ hopes of a comeback when she won the clinching match at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-2 over Ellie Faulkner to put the Broncos up 4-1.

After a battle, the Toreros earned their second point when Kevey topped Boise State’s Mackova in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 7-6. The No. 3 singles match won the award for “battle of the day” with BSU’s Jochimsen facing USD’s Milou Teeling. Teeling was able to steal the first set 2-6 before Jochimsen came back with a 6-2 win of her own in the second set. The two battled throughout the second set, forcing a tiebreak that led to a 7-6 (2) win for Jochimsen and the Broncos’.

The Broncos will take a day off from action, returning to the court on Sunday, March 9 when they host No. 48 Saint Mary’s College (Calif.). The match will be only the second home match for the Broncos against a ranked opponent this season; the first ended in a 4-3 win over then ranked No. 67 Utah on February 9. The Sunday match between the Broncos and the Gaels of St. Mary’s is slated for a 10 a.m. start at the Boise State Appleton Tennis Center, weather permitting.
