Broncos Sweep New Mexico, 7-0, for First Home Win
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 62 ranked Boise State women's tennis team found its stride, Friday (March 4) night, as the Broncos swept New Mexico 7-0 at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Complex to secure their first home win (1-2) of the year.
The Broncos improved to 8-4 overall this season, Friday, thanks to dominant play in doubles that carried into six straight set singles wins. The women won the doubles point for the 10th time this season to gain an early 1-0 lead in the dual.
Elyse Edwards and Sonia Klamczynska scored the first win of the day for Boise State at No. 2 doubles as they beat Michaela Bezdickova and Nikolina Grbac, 8-3. Lauren Megale and Marlena Pietuzuch would clinch the early advantage for the Broncos next at No. 1 by beating Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva, 8-3. Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo completed the sweep next at No. 3 with an 8-4 win over Laura Richardson and Kristin Eggleston.
Boise State would keep its momentum rolling into singles competition as the Broncos swept all six matches to cap their big night. Edwards got things going for Boise State in singles as she beat Eggleston, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead in the dual. Klamczynska would put the team win within reach next at No. 2 as she topped Villanueva, 6-4, 6-3.
Pietzuch managed to clinch the dual victory at No. 5 singles as she knocked off Bonner, 7-6, 6-3.
Boise State wouldn't slow down despite already having the team win in the books, as the Broncos rolled to wins in the last three singles matches to complete the sweep. Jasper captured the next win for Boise State as she beat Grbac, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 3. She was followed by Vo, who knocked off Michaela Oldani, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
Megale would cap the Broncos perfect night last at No. 1 as she earned a hard fought second victory to beat Bezdickova, 6-3, 7-5.
Boise State will look to continue its strong play on Sunday as the women finish off their weekend home stand with a showdown against Montana. The Broncos and Grizzlies will meet at 10 a.m. at BOAS.
