No. 46 Boise State Upsets No. 40 BYU, 5-2, in Provo

PROVO, Utah The No. 46-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team earned an upset win over No. 40-ranked Brigham Young University on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Cougars, 5-2. The Broncos improve to 8-2 on the season while also improving to 6-1 against ITA Central Region opponents. The Cougars fell to 3-5 on the season, including 2-2 against regional foes.


The Broncos were able to earn the doubles point, boosting themselves to a 1-0 lead in the team scoring. Junior Pichittra Thongdach and freshman Lauren Megale were the first to pick up a win, defeating Kristina Doerr and Romina Nedakovic, 8-4, in the No. 1 doubles match. Boise State was able to quickly clinch the doubles point with senior Laura Baum and junior Bianca Jochimsen defeating Elle Carney and Chie Hayasaka, 8-6, in the No. 3 match.


BYU was able to tie earn one doubles win with No. 60-ranked Megan Price and McCall Jones downing Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Vivien Silfany, 8-4, in the No. 2 doubles match.


In singles play, Silfany helped the Broncos jump to a 2-0 lead after defeating Nedakovic, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match. Thongdach, who holds the No. 95 spot in the national singles rankings, defeated Jones, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 1 match to push Boise State to a 3-0 lead in the team score.


No. 104-ranked Doerr was able to earn one team-point for the Cougars in the No. 2 spot, defeating Megale in a tough 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 match.


Boise State’s Jochimsen earned a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 4 singles match, defeating Hayasaka and clinching the match point for the Broncos.


BYU’s Carney earned the Cougars’ final team-point in the No. 6 match, defeating freshman Rocio Frej, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.


Boise State senior Wlodarczyk rounded out the team score to a 5-2 win for the Broncos when she defeated BYU’s Price, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the No. 5 singles match.


The Broncos will prepare for another weekend on the road when they head to Albuquerque, N.M., to take on the University of New Mexico and Northern Arizona University on Feb. 27 and 28. Boise State will first face the UNM Lobos at 5 p.m. on Friday and follow up with a 1 p.m. match on Saturday against the NAU Lumberjacks. Both matches will be held at the UNM Tennis Complex.
