Broncos Upset No. 38 New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The No. 67 Boise State University women’s tennis team defeated 38th ranked, New Mexico, 5-2, Friday, at the Lobo Tennis Center at Albuquerque, N.M.

With the win Boise State improved its record to 6-1 in dual matches, including victories over No. 38 New Mexico and No. 75 Nevada.

The Broncos started the match by capturing the two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.

Bianca Jochimsen and Tiffany Coll dominated at the No. 3 position, breaking the team of Nora Quintal and Maria Sotirchos three times en route to an 8-2 victory. In the No. 1 position, Jana Mackova and Laura Baum battled Iva Gersic and Ola Abou-Zekry to 8-7, however Boise State garnered the victory when Gersic was forced to retired because of knee problems.

With the doubles point secure, the Broncos needed just three victories in the six singles matches to win the dual match and they received those in the three through six positions.

No. 3, Jana Mackova defeated Mackenzie White, 1-6, 7-5 and 10-5, to capture a match point for the Broncos. Senior Stacey Housley followed with a straight sets victory, 6-1 and 6-3, over Lucy Scott to put Boise State within one point of capturing the match. The Broncos then turned to undefeated Klaudia Wlodarcyzk, who remained perfect with a 7-6 and 6-2 victory over Quintal.

Coll collected an insurance point for the Broncos when she beat Jennifer Ryba 6-4 and 6-3.

In singles, Jochimsen was defeated by Abou-Zekry, 6-4 and 6-3 while Polina Kokoulina fell to Zmak 6-3, 1-6 and 6-2. In doubles Kokoulina and Wllodarczyk lost to Scott and Zmak, 8-5.
