Broncos Roll Past Vandals, 6-1
PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 44 ranked Boise State women's tennis team managed to remain perfect (2-0) in Western Athletic Conference competition, Sunday (Feb. 20), as the Broncos knocked off in-state rival Idaho, 6-1, in Pullman, Wash. to extend their overall record to 7-2 this season.
Boise State asserted itself early against the Vandals (4-2 overall, 0-1 WAC) winning all three doubles matches to gain a quick 1-0 advantage in the dual. The Broncos wouldn't slow down in singles competition winning five of six matches, with their only loss coming in a second set forfeit.
In doubles, Boise State scored its first win of the day at No. 3 where Morgan Basil and Sonia Klamczynska would play to an 8-1 victory over Silvia Irimescu and Barbara Maciocha. Lauren Megale and Marlena Pietzuch would clinch the team win next at No. 1, taking down Victoria Lozano and Lauren Simpson, 8-5. Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo would complete the doubles sweep last at No. 2 with an 8-4 win over Yvette Ly and Molly Knox.
The Broncos used their early momentum to roll into singles competition where the women would score three straight set victories to clinch the dual win. Klamczynska secured the first singles win of the day at No. 2 as she beat Lozano, 6-0, 6-1 to extend the team lead to 2-0. Jasper would put the dual win within reach next at No. 3 as she topped Irimescu, 6-0, 6-2.
Pietzuch wasted little time clinching Boise State's fifth win in six duals as she beat Maciocha, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead in the dual.
Megale and Basil would each earn singles victories to extend the final team score. Megale beat Simpson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 before Basil secured a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win against Ly at No. 6.
Idaho would score its lone point of the day at No. 5 singles as Vo was forced to retire after falling behind in her match against Knox, 3-6, 2-3.
Sunday marked the end of a month long stretch of duals away from home for Boise State, as the Broncos have yet to play at home this season. The women will return to Boise this week to host their first dual of the year however, as Boise State will face Arizona and Saint Mary's over the weekend.
The Broncos will meet the Wildcats on Friday (Feb. 25) at 1:30 p.m. Boise State will then host the Gaels on Sunday (Feb. 27) at 10 a.m. Both duals are scheduled to be held at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Center.
