No. 44 Boise State Downs No. 74 Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 44 ranked Boise State women's tennis team opened its weekend double header in Pullman, Wash. in successful fashion, Saturday (Feb. 19), with a 5-2 win over No. 74 Washington State to improve to 4-2 against ranked opponents this season.

The Broncos managed to extend their overall record to 6-2 (1-0 Western Athletic Conference) thanks in part to another strong showing in doubles competition to gain an early lead over the Cougars (8-2). Boise State secured a pair of wins, including an exciting doubles point clincher in a tie-breaker to take a 1-0 lead over WSU heading into singles.

Lauren Megale and Marlena Pietzuch scored the first win of the day for the Broncos, knocking off Olga Musilovich and Liudmila Vasilieva, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. After falling at No. 3 doubles however, Boise State would need a strong finish from Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo to secure the eighth doubles point victory of the season for the Broncos.

Jasper and Vo battled Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras to an 8-8 tie at No. 2, putting the ever important doubles point resting on a seven point breaker. The Broncos showed their resiliency as Jasper and Vo would win the breaker, 7-4, to clinch the 1-0 advantage for Boise State heading into singles.

Momentum proved to be short lived for the Broncos however, as the Cougars scored wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles to take their first lead of the dual with just four singles matches to go.

Jasper answered the call for Boise State once again though, as the senior knocked off Kankaras at No. 4 singles to even the team score at 2-2. After splitting the first two sets, 6-1, 6-7, Jasper sealed the win with a 6-1 third set victory to pull the Broncos back into a tie.

Sonia Klamczynska would put the dual win within reach for the Broncos next at No. 2 singles as she earned a come from behind win over Vasilieva to give Boise State a 3-2 advantage. After dropping the first set to Vasilieva, 4-6, Klamczynska won back to back sets to record the 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.

With the team win in the Broncos' sights, Morgan Basil gave Boise State its sixth win of the season as she topped Marina Nicolas, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6. Vo would put the finishing touches on the dual as she beat Musilovich, 4-6, 7-6 (10-7) at No. 5.

The Broncos will look to complete a weekend sweep in Pullman, Wash. on Sunday when the women square off against in-state rival Idaho for their second WAC dual of the season. Boise State will meet the Vandals at 10 a.m. (PST).
